Pileated Woodpeckers are so kewl. They fly with such a prehistoric looking type of flight and are really hard to take a photo of. Great photography!

They do look cool when they fly! I hear them all the time around our yard and see them from time to time but not up close. This was a rare moment.

Its crazy because I really don't have a good long distance zoom. I was standing next to the rover inspecting how I'm going to re-route my exhaust exit and I heard him land on the wooden fence behind me. Turned around and he was just sitting there and started pecking at the fence. Watched him hop down the fence and land on the spare. So I slowly backed away and went inside to grab my camera hoping he would still be there and sure enough he was. I kept inching my way towards him until I was about 8 to 10 feet away.

The real question is canon or nikon? Pretty sure NC has a Canon.

The photo of the wood pecker on the side on the fence in full view with the pine tree above would make a good HDR filter test.

I have these all over my yard in Vermont. Noisey buggers too.

These guys can do a number on power poles around here. It doesn't matter if its pressure treated wood . The hum of the wires going through the pole drives them crazy and they bore huge holes.

BTW I loves me Canon too.
