1997 land rover disco alarm problem

I had to replace the alarm box on my disco ,the green box,I picked up a used one and plugged it in and know all my disco does is spin over and does not fire, the fuel pump will not activate and there is no spark, the doors lock fine and the alarm activates,, Do you have to get this used alarm box programed ,can a person do this himself?? I am asking because nearest rover dealer is 200 miles away,,:(

What be this "alarm box" thou speakest of? Mine Series Rover doth not contain such magic.:eek:
