Rover's headroom

A neighbor was checking out our Rovers and commented on the headspace common to both. I told him that they were designed that way to accommodate the bowler hats commonly worn in the UK. I can't
recall where I heard or read that, is it even true? Yes, beer was involved so maybe my BS gear got engaged!
