My '60 SII SWB has been re-wired by a PO. It is much different than stock but very workable and thoughtfully done.

When the fuel gauge and the tank is near empty the needle jumps to full. I have the same sender unit on other cars but I've never experienced this before. I think the sender and gauge pre-date a voltage stabilizer, but perhaps that is what I need.

Any thoughts?

It reads normally otherwise? Sounds like a short in the sender to me... Voltage goes down, down, down, then something shorts at the bottom and full voltage comes through again.

I had an odd gauge problem that was similar to yours--It turns out that the wires on the sender were reversed (on the wrong terminal). Swapping them around so that the ground wire went to the ground terminal and the + went to the + realy helped.
