    More engine knocking

I ran my s3 out of gas the other day, after refilling it I heard a very loud knocking when under load, never had that noise before. The three expert mechanics at the plant checked her out for me and thought it was a bent push rod. Also found that the timing was way off. We static timed it (very hard to start since runing out of gas) and then adjusted it but the knock remained. I got it home and removed the rocker arm assembly to check the rods (per their instructions), all are straight. Any ideas? Before I removed the rocker arm I checked the valves (first time for me) and two of them were pretty loose, but i went ahead and pulled the the rocker off anyway thinking I'd find a bent push rod.
I really don't know what I'm doing but I found that it's about as much fun wrenching and learning how my truck works as it is driving it!

Could you have filled with a lower octane after running out? Lower octane = more prone to detonation / knocking.
