Anyone here into Geocaching?

Earlier this year I placed a new Geocache and amongst the many things inside it, is a D90 matchbox that I turned into a travel bug... (too many Jeep TB's out there)

It's only moved a few times, and so far its traveled approx 62 miles.. be on the look out for it! Talbot

the Mrs and I tried it a few times, its a fun way to fill a Sunday afternoon. Its been a while, but ironically with the new Rover we've been talking about it again - mostly b/c its a good excuse to drive around town.

Unfortunately, we aren't close enough for your travel bug ;)

I'm inspired to place one around here though.

Very cool! I wish I knew more about geocaching but I am not the type that can read something and know how to do it. ie: I can't figure out how to use my handheld GPS unit. :) I did it twice with an ex (who did know how to use a handheld GPS) and it was silly but exciting at the same time. There is something thrilling when you find your little magic box and then leave a part of yourself behind in turn.

Started Geocaching to learn how to use my then new GPS. It's a fun diversion and really helped me sharpen up my skills using my Garmin. If your Defender TB ever makes it to New Mexico I'll be sure to move it along. I moved a Jeep TB along to a guy and now it's traveling around Australia. Crickey!

I've been geocaching for almost 5 years and love it although I have really started getting selective in the types of caches I look for. Guess where my RN user name came from? On the flip side my Geocaching name is LandRover (http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=7ce34b1d-e04e-49d9-9244-6c537be14fd6). Geocaching is what gives me an excuse to get my Land Rover up into the mountains of the great PNW.
A couple of years ago I found a butt load of Matchbox DisoII's at the Dollar Store so I used to leave those as swag in caches.
I have two Land Rover Travelbugs:
LandRover TB#1 (http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=131425) had over 20,000 miles on it before it disappeared in South Austrailia.
"Sugar Loaf" Green Land Rover Travel Bug (http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=108876) and has 4,200 miles on it.

my wife and I have tried it a few times. It is good practice to figure out how to use your GPS and the exercise helps a old desk jockey like me.

Sad story - the wife found a bug that wanted to end up in a small village near her house in the UK. She carried it over with her last month but was unable to find the cache in the town and had to return to the US with the bug still in her posession.

(root cause was the wife's mum - typical whinging pom - was with her at the time and did not see the point in tromping through the woods and complained until they left without finding it - very glad I was not with them this year)

Hey, nice to see someone else with the same ideas. I've been geocaching since 2001 and generally find only a few caches each month so even though I've been doing it a long time my totals aren't all that high.

I had a similar idea for travel bugs (also got tired of all the Jeeps) so I have a series of old Matchbox No.12 "Safari" Land Rovers out in the world. Two of them have traveled quite a distance:

So far I've only managed to do one actual geocache find in my Land Rover (cache right next to the trail a group of us were driving) but I quite often use it to get to the trail head.
