    Timing chain tensioner

Truck jumped time so I've got it apart and now looking at the chain and gears. . The tensioner ratchet is catching on the third indent with about three (IIRC) more indents to go, in other words it seem like tensioner has alot more room to expand and take up slack. I makes me think that the tensioner did not do it's job. I can pull about an inch of slack in the chain. Anyone have experience with the tensioner failing at this stage? I see our hosts offer a different style tensioner, is this the reason? Gears look very good so I'm thinking just a chain and tensioner... not the whole kit.
    Opinions please.
