Just out of curiosity... what purpose does this rivet serve?
My thought is that there is supposed to be a clip here that holds the tire iron....

Does that grass get itchy when you fasten your seat belts?

Spare tire mount.

Spare tire mount has no rivets in it.
It looks as though someone took out all the special retainers used to hold the crank and the 2 piece jack handle, and put rivets back in the holes.

..so get rid of 'em and use al-u-minium. Or you'll end up with four big holes someday.

The grass is itchy...the biggest problem right now is that the ground did not supply a place to buckle up....
The hole might serve as a nice little place to run a cable for a kicking sub in the back. (jk)

Those four bolts are steel and they do hold the spare tire mount (I have addressed the rusting part on the rebuild). What I am talking about is the little pop rivet below the bolts.

I am thinking about pop riveting a clip back in. Is there only one clip that should go there? Also, I am guessing the pop rivet that runs on the bottom gets a clip too... Can someone snap a picture?

Thanks.

Bertha's right, your starting handle and (and for me, my tire iron in place of the jack-handle) are stored in that space behind the seat, secured by little spring-clips (well, would be, if I had clips...)

Those are the same holes that are used to mount the spare tire mount. Someone may have plugged them with rivets or may have used them for something else but that's where the mount goes, on the other side of the bulkhead of course.

If you can tell by that picture that those rivets are steel, then you should donate your eyes to NASA.

The mount is still on the truck as evidenced by the 4 rusty bolt heads. The rivet is to the left of where the spare tire mounts.

Opps, you're right. I thought he was talking about the 4 rusty things that I saw as rivets.
That single little rivet? May be for something like the crank or may be doing nothing other than plugging a hole.

I thought we were talking about the four rusty things, which on my low resolution screen look just like rusty rivets (hole in the middle and everything).

I now understand that they are bolt heads. My bad.

Does someone happen to have a picture of how it is supposed to be?

Evidently I have hit my picture quota-send me your email and I will send you a pic of how it mounts.

May not be for the crank handle. Here are 2 pics. One with the crank handle in place and the other with it removed. I didn't see any hole or rivet where you've got one. The bolts in the pics are where the rusty rivets were in yours.

Course this is off my Series IIA.

My SIII has that rivet as well, not in th exact spot, but close. I doubt it ever held anything as there is no evidence of scarring or discoloration. And who would bother to re-rivet? My starting handle is located under the LH rear seat.

I've got two Series III tubs in the yard and they both have that same rivet to the left of the bolts holding the spare mount...... neither has anything else attached to the bulkhead by that rivet ....
