I wanted to train it to look for falling parts and retrieve them
Don't waste your time training it to retrieve the parts that fall off. They're junk anyhow. Train it to retrieve the new replacement parts, preferably at night. It'll be cheaper in the end.

When I was a river guide some years back we used to always say anything dropped in the river and unretrievable was broken and no good, "I needed a new buck knife anyway."

In a similar note, I have heard, "Never have an expensive dive knife, that way you won't be tempted to retrieve it"
