Grab bar, interior rear door....

Hello,
After two trips to the hardware store, I'm starting to pull my hair out.

What size screw do I need to attach the grab bar to the inside of a SIII's rear door?

Mine was (not really) being held on by 2 large sheet metal screws. I don't know if that was a previous owner thing, but it was always rattling loose, so I ended up just putting in two riv-nuts, threaded for 1/4-20 bolts and bolted by handle securely to the door.

Sheet metal screws are LOUSY for this job and may have enlarged the lip of the hole on yours, making even the largest screw not work

To answer your question, I don't know the size, but I'd just get 3 or 4 different bags of fat sheet metal screws about 1/2" long and return the ones that don't work.

What sizes have you tried? The threads may be damaged. If damaged, use a tap to clean up the threads. You definitely don't want "screws", you want "bolts".

If the threads have severe damage, you can re-tap for 5/16 x 24, the packaging the tap comes in well tell you what size to drill out your hole to before tapping.

.......and in 100 years all you will need to do is hit "replicate" on your computer, and one will pop out for you. Forget the hardware store for this stuff, unless the PO has retapped the hole.

Interesting...Must have been a PO bodge job--attaching my handle with enormous screws. Oddly, I saw no evidence of a threaded anchor anywhere along the top door channel.

Poor choice of words, I'm definitly looking for the right bolt here, not screw.

I have a feeling the threads are damaged. I'll check out those sizes and let you know, thanks again.

I just replaced mine in my ongoing effort to clean things up, they were 1/4-28.
