    1. Return line, can be blanked off.
    2. It should be blanked off (ie not drilled for fitting).

I agree with Scott, the returns on the diesel tanks are in the corner and the draw tubes located similarly to the petrol tank.

Interesting. You might want to pop the sender out and grab an inspection mirror (if necessary) to see which tube goes all the way to the bottom of the tank--That'll be your pickup tube.

On the picture the pickup is in the corner. I wasn't sure if it really matter. I'll switch it around. But you can cap off the return, correct? No harm doing this?

Just make sure your fuel cap is vented and you'll be fine by capping off the return.

The pics are gone from the original post. I have a tank from a 70 that has the return tube not blanked over; where is that routed? When I pulled the tank it has a hose that ran to no where that I could tell and I can't recall if it was plugged or not. Is it to let fumes escape?

you can run it to a fuel filter near the carb when the filter has one of them second smaller outlet. i have a weber were i drilled and taped a second port for the float tank. put in a hose bib half the size of the one for the line coming from the fuel pump. it's supposed to allow the fuel to keep circulating when the float valve is closed thus keeping the fuel cooler. but i think a return line was also some sort of emissions control stuff on the later series
