Discovered that I had lost my turn signals. I guess the old ground wire in the harness gave up the ghost. Ran a new ground and they are working again. Now all I have to do is remember why that black wire isn't connected to anything.

I trouble-shot what I think is a fuel pump issue. truck died at drive-thru, turns over fine but will not start...fuses OK...replaced fuel pump relay....truck started and ran fine...turned truck off...tried to start again, no go...turns over fine but doesn't appear to be getting fuel. Any thoughts? Oh, by the way, did I forget to mention this is a '99 DII? Posted a thread on the DII forum but for the most part it's been ignored.

After two years of on and off work I finally got the wheels into the powder coater, back again and bf goodrich all terrain tires mounted/ I went with 31x10.5x15. Put them on the truck last night and just now drove it. No so shockingly the truck drives WAY better now that the 40 year rubber has been replace (yes it still had the original tires). I even went on the freeway which would have been terrifying before. Below is the truck and also with the others, the '57 Series I new to the fold and the 95' D-90. Really nice to get past this milestone and actually have a truck that I now like to drive.

Put almost 200 miles towing a trailer on the old girl yesterday. Went to pick up some new toys for my garage! :) The truck ran perfect and got 17.2mpg with about 600lbs in the trailer for half the trip.

Now I just need to clean the 90wt off the inside of the windshield! That reminds me, I think it's time to put that new rear pinion seal in that's on the bench. 69866987

Found that my low beam and both side lights were out. Dug into my old parts cabinet and found the Hella bulb that had been sitting in there for the past...I don't know...10 years and installed it. Replaced the bulbs in the side lights and found that despite the plinths being some of the newest parts on the Rover, the plastic had dried out and cracked over the past six years.

I'll need to find some suitable replacements. Nonetheless, new bulbs and all is well.

Fixed a faulty temperature gauge by routing the voltage through the voltage stabilizer. Wiring originally went direct to the gauge. This did not fix my fuel gauge issue, though. Driving home tonight, noticed that the fuel gauge had gone from F to 1/2 at about half a tank. Whoppee! Maybe i jiggled the ground enough at the tank to get it to work? Bad news was the speedo/odo was reading zero. :) Hopefully the cable just came loose at the speedo. Got a feeling that when the speedo is fixed the fuel gauge will go back to F. :(

If you are really in a bind, and don't want to pull the trigger on a new valve just yet, put a plumbing ball valve into the line, and a hose barb in to replace the old valve. That will buy you plenty of time to research and source exactly what you want.

I received my new to me 58 S1 109 on Friday. Truck is nearly rust free from Idaho area. Spent a little time getting it running.
Didn't start when we rolled off the truck. Spent about 1/2 hour in pouring rain with no luck. Pushed it in the garage with my tractor. Drained the transfer case, gearbox, fronta and rear diffs and replaced the fluids. Still need to do the swivels, steering box and steering relay. Not sure how to drain the steering box or relay, hay just top it off. Dropped a midasized exhaust. Manifold nuts came off well. See a number of task to take care of as it has been sitting for quite a while. With winter (salty roads) coming and a bugeye project in the garage it will be going to sleep for the winter pretty soon.

Everything came from our hosts except the muffler ( they are back ordered on the Proline till early november). Haven't smelled the exhaust but I can, what should I be looking for? It smells better in the cab because i'm not getting anymore exhaust gases leaking in.
It's a pretty easy job except figuring out how to get the front pipe alinged and in place. That took about as long as bolting everything else up. Hard to describe but you wil see what I mean. Not even sure how I did it, all of a sudden I had it just right and the back end of the front pipe made it over the cross member.

Been up to my elbows in my new 58 109 pu. Changed all fluids, dropped the "Midisized exhaust" as called by PO. Having a hell of a time trying to locate an intermediate exhaust for it. Purchased new front and silencer and they seem correct. I am going to bend some conduit to the shape I want and have a pipe made, minus the flanges. Will make up the final tweeks and weld on the flanges. If anyone has any other ideas I'm all ears.
Also working on the wiring. The Po had installed a panel with a number of switches which I removed. Now working on tidying up all that, many things not working and some bad wiring, mostly on rear 1/2 of the truck. Made a new rear harness, plate harness, now trying to trace back the turn signals, stop lights. Don't even have power to the flasher switch so need to follow that back.
Wiring overall is not bad and follow the wiring diagrams, except where the new panel switches were added and impossible to distinguish colors. . Have to replace most of the connectors, wiring and bullets are mostly good just the shilds are disinegrated.

In the last month I pulled the entire dash of my series 3 stripped off all the foam welded on some modifications so a radio will fit and sent it out for truck bed lining in black. I painted the back plate to match and added LR logos. I pulled all the wiring in the wiring in the dash to get ready for a tilt wheel install and Power steering. I modified the Gas pedal with a pedal from a jeep wrangler to add more comfortable slow speed driving. I added the tabs on the throttle linkage for a hand throttle (Using a Bike Shifting lever on the gearbox stick). I made templates for the aluminum guard plates on the wings, sides and rear. These will be installed shortly. Rebuilt my 8274 winch and prepped for install. I figured out the Glow plug wiring issue and decided to start over with a new harness. - been a busy month but she's starting to shape up. Next I tackle the springs and shocks, door rust and Seats.

Aired up the tires (all were just a touch low). Moved the spare from the rear door to the hood per my brother's request. Searched high and low in the truck and the garage for the bolts to hold said tire in place. My brother found them in a place I had looked twice...inside the truck.

Watched as my brother checked the transfer case and gear box oil. Dragged the bucked out 90 weight out of the garage for him and then laughed as he proceeded to spray oil everywhere but inside those boxes.

Oiled the driver and rear door latch so they would close a bit "smoother".

The entire family watched him pull out and head out to Vail. Then all laughed as he pulled back to the house. My wife pointed out that he has never left in our Rover without returning once for one reason or another. This time, he forgot his backpack.

My stainless exhaust went on in '94. It's still there after 18 Maine winters - only the intermediate pipe has been replaced (5 or so years ago).

Yes, the original gaskets appeared to be fairly thin and really soft, like a neoprene foam. The latest Genuine gaskets are made from a very hard material and are quite thick. I didn't end up using them because they had no 'give' to them and they weren't going to form a good seal. Instead I used 3M body caulking to seal them. I would recommend using something similar.

I was thinking it was there to keep water from running down into the cab and maybe seal out any engine compartment fumes? Strange design though in that it has a "U-Shape" profile that could actually trap water in the pedestal area. I guess they rely on the lip and channel that hangs over it to block the water from running constantly down in there. When I bought the car it was filled with acorns from a squirrel who was using it as a storage bin!

I was wondering how the Rover was running after the head job! I was going to PM you yesterday as I hadn't heard, but time got away from me.

Trace the wires from the high/low switch on the drivers side floor to the connectors behind the front grille. I believe there is a connection in the wire somewhere near the engine block near the bulkhead that you probably need to clean up. I must have disturbed it while you were fiddling. It happened to me this summer, and a quick go around with the various electrical fittings fixed the issue.

Congrats on the winch, but why the hibernation? The Maine Winter Romp is coming up in February!

Just a heads up, my 71 2a master cyl started leaking at the seal between the reservoir and the body so I picked up a SEALED rebuild kit for $90 plus, after I cleaned everything then rebuilt the inside I found the kit does NOT contain the ONLY seal I needed and being it's not an "O" ring but a special seal I couldn't get one. Then couldn't get a series 2a 88 master cyl either so I installed a series 3 109 with no problems. Just saying... the lowest cost is not always the cheapest.

Hope to get it running well soon, next project is to trouble shoot the 4wd. I'm about 95% certain its the old warn locking hubs since the front drive shaft turns in 4wd but (with the hubs "locked") there still isn't any power to the front wheels. I'm taking suggestions on what to do... replace with warn hubs, return to stock hubs or some other solution. Shes going to do a fair amount of city driving and quite a bit of off-roading/hunting. tkneese: WARN lockout hubs can be assembled incorrectly very easily. I have seen several competent mechanics assemble them incorrectly causing the 4wd to not work. Here is what I would do:

with your Rover in 2wd and hubs unlocked, the front driveshaft should be able to turned by hand very easily. Now, engage the 4wd and the driveshaft should not turn freely by hand. If it turns freely, then you are not engaging 4wd in the t-case.

If you are truly engaging the t-case, then I would jack up the front end and get both front wheels off the ground. Keep it in 2WD. Turn each wheel by hand with the hubs unlocked. The wheel should spin freely. Now engage one hub at a time. You should feel resistance after the hub is locked. If you don't feel resistance after locking the hub, then the hub is not engaging fully. With both hubs locked, if you spin one wheel, the opposite wheel will spin in the opposite direction if the hubs are working properly.

If you find a hub not working correctly, disassemble the hub and clean thoroughly. Make sure you put it back together correctly as it is supposed to be. If you are unsure, take the other one apart to see or just ask.

Hope that helps.

Thanks John for the great advice. I had previously confirmed the front drive shaft was getting power (don't ask how since it probably wasn't the safest way) but I have been scratching my head how to troubleshoot which hub it is. I'll follow your instructions and hopefully its repairable. If not I may return them to the original hubs for ease of use and lubrication issues. Thanks again!

With the type of driving you describe doing, you should be fine with the standard drive members. I find the free wheeling hubs do make a difference on highway runs though. That little extra bit of power you get from not having to turn so much metal seems to let me keep up with traffic on hills better when the engine is maxed out at top speed.

i replaced my hood latch mechanism, which has been a chronic irritant for years. The hood would spring up (not completely open) as is you had worked the lever to open the hood, and always left a 1-2" gap between the front wings and the edge of the hood. The new latch seems to be holding the hood down properly and I may be able now to adjust the big pin on the hood to snug it down even more.

Not going to miss that. No more BSF bolts in any of it or studs in the bottom of the swivel housing. The only complaint which is minor is that there was some cleanup required on the inside of one swivel housing that required a die grinder. The instructions do state that minor grinding/cleanup may be necessary though. Matt Browne has taken a few pictures. I'll try to get him to send them to me.

The 4 wheel kit #'s are PLK6117 with new bearings and PLK6119 utilizing your original bearings.

Talked to my brother on the phone as he lay in the snow trying to replace the clutch slave cylinder. Heckled him on why he keeps breaking my toys until he got frustrated and threatened to hang up on me.

Asked him if he wanted the Expedition to drive instead as we finally got that back from the body shop. (He stuffed it into a parked car doing a slide for life down a snow covered hill) He refused and said he prefers my Rover.

I'm starting to enjoy the "own a Rover but make your brother do all the work on it" scheme.

Wrapped up the ROAM install. My 15" wheels rubbed on the calipers so minor adjustments had to be made. I am very, very pleased with the results. Now it's time to start saving for rear discs. Replaced both driveshafts, and added a new Series rear step. Drove home from Eliot, ME to Brewer, ME in single digit temperatures and damn near froze. Life is good and love my Rover.

Night and day difference with the discs eh Jim? If you can spare the $$$ I think it's near the top of the list of things you can do to a series to make it right without changing it's basic character.

I'd give the kit an overall thumbs up. I did have to do some work with a die grinder inside the swivel housings to correct some interference with casting "issues' not a big worry and it is mentioned in the instructions.

The Calipers needed almost 1/8" machined from the outer surfaces to fit the 15 inch wheels being used (wheels would not even turn when installed). They were Rover wheels and they were cleaned up on the inside. I'd recommend that this kit be limited to 16" wheels as the clearance with 15" wheels even with the caliper modified is much to tight for reason, and foreign objects like the dried up red backed salamander I found inside one of the wheels lol.
I will note that the calipers used were Pro line and may differ from the Genuine part in overall dimensions......something I did not verify.

Yeah, I drove mine to work today also. EP90 is a little thick at -5 degrees. I usually put the transfer case in nutral, and the transmission in first for a few minutes during warm-up to stir the EP90 around a little before taking off. It still feels like you are driving with one foot on the brakes the whole way!

RN offers the "Companion Kit" for either 2 wheel PLK6116 Kit, with new hub bearings and PLK6118 Kit using your existing hub bearings.
The 4 wheel kit #'s are PLK6117 with new bearings and PLK6119 utilizing your original bearings.

For many years I used to think that too, it was difficult to get everything realigned after an engine or manifold removal, then recently with the body off the frame I installed a completely new exhaust system front to rear and I was surprised at how much give and take (wiggle room)) there was. The exhaust was very reasonably priced, readily available and it sealed very nicely at the manifold which was not always the case.

Last time I did this job was when I did a frame off and you are right about how easy it is at that point. Got it all back together...running...but I likely have an exhaust leak somewhere. Very consistent puff/chirp and a bit of smoke after about 90 seconds of idle. I suspect I may not have the front pipe tied into the manifold properly.

Hey, NdeeAnna, what was the cause of your puff/chirp?

I replaced the head-to-manifold gasket because it had broken and there was an exhaust leak, leaving a flutter and loss of power. After I got it all back together, the puffing and chirping was coming from the front pipe to manifold connection. Got back under there and fitted it better (or properly). All is great now, except my carb. Next!

Nice work... looks great.

I might add that when off roading I have seen willow branches get caught between the slider and the fender, I think the front and rear should also attach to the inside of the fenders, not for support but to avoid anything getting caught in between. A simple strip of metal across with some self tapping screws would suffice, better yet welded to the slider and bolted through the fender.

Today I swapped out my rebuilt power steering pump (Scout II power steering conversion).

This makes my third rebuilt power steering pump in 2 years. First rebuild developed a noisy bearing within a few months. Second one got put in last fall and had a leak. Tightening hoses didn't help. Finally after a good cleaning & laying underneath for a while I discovered it leaked where the pump went into the reservoir. Snow happened soon thereafter. Lucas power steering stop leak didn't help and as it continued to stay cold the pump continued to leak unabated. I must have 2 gallons of power steering fluid on the driveway. It warmed up to fifty so I swapped the pump today. No apparent leaks or unusual noises so far. So I hope that the third pump is a charm. I was thinking of power washing the driveway but with nights below freezing I don't want to risk leaving water in the power washer. Besides we are expecting more snow in a couple days. The rebuilt pumps came from NAPA. Unfortunately I'm getting quick at power steering pump swaps in my truck.

Hopefully one more project completed.

I finally got the new Flaming River Tilt column attached to the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Gearbox using a Shaft from a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Next step is to get the Pitman arm to mount to the draglink. I will be cutting the S3 Link and attaching the jeep end to it. On the plus side it looks like the jeep links diameter is just about perfect to slip over the S3 one and weld. Doing this now will prevent needing to pull the radiator again later. Will clean up the front of the frame and radiator panel. Also need to get the gunk, thickest I've ever seen' off the engine. It is hard as a rock can barely scrape it off. I found the source of the leak that this gunk originated from. The oil feed pipe to the head had a leak, had a bad repair at the top fitting.

bracket modified to fit Delco 10Si. This was very easy. Not a lot of instruction available online pertaining to the physical mouunting (The Pangolin kit will not fit a diesel)- probably not really needed, but I was cautious about making the move. Once done, I was amazed at the ease in making it fit. I used a friend's alt to tst fit and have a 10Si (7127) on order. The trick is to use a double pulley alternator to ensure proper belt alignment, not so easy to find these days- at least in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Bought the crimp tool from Autosparks for less than anyone in the USA was selling them for. I learned that you're supposed to put the bullet in the tool and close it so the bullet is held in place. THEN put the wire in and crimp. Otherwise you need 3 hands.

Yes good advice there, but I like to use the spare tire carrier that carries my spare standing up and kind of takes up the space for the gaurd, and I have considered that, Instead, I leave the crappy looking interior in the truck and plan to buy a good set of elephant, or deluxe seats, to use for shows, etc.

well got bit with a little bit of the while your at it with the truck. The radiatior needs to be recored, should have that back pretty soon. The bottom of the radiator panel and frame in the area of the battery stand had a little surface rust so I pulled both wings and cleaned and painted the forward part of the frame. I have the rad panel out and its getting sandblasted tomorrow. I also worked on two of the riveted wheels which will be going back on the truck. I had a little oops during the work. I knocked the generator off the bumper and the pulley broke in two pieces S#!T !!!. Found my engine oil leak, it was the feed pipe to the head.
It had been repaired but not successfully. I sourced a new one. Also ordered all new hose, a belt and T stat.
