I finally got around to unbolting and de-wiring a PO fabricated trailer connector that was mounted through the rear tub. I hope to find a great local welder that can patch up the nice round hole that remains.

Today I hope to start it up and find out if I just blew the muffler or the muffler AND one of the pipes when it backfired.

Right now it sounds like a lobster boat.

Well, if I can count the last five weekdays:

the engine got:
New cam, lifters, timing chain, timing gears, fuel rail, fuel lines, cylinder heads, timing cover and water pump. The engine is in final stages of button up.

Gearbox:
I dropped off parts for an NP435 gearbox buildup at a local transmission specialist. He will be building a box with Ford NP435 case, Chevy NP435 gears & top cover, Ford 35 spline output shaft. This gearbox should be ready early next week and will replace the T-18 currently in my truck.

Also in process:
Recently took delivery of a new striped canvas for the Dormobile lifting top, a pintle hook, a new set of OME shocks and I have a new front bumper on order from Ike.

Walked out of the house....20 degrees....got into the Rover, pulled the choke out, turned the key, hit the button.

Fired right up.....let it warm for about a minute, dropped her into gear and drove to work.

Finally got her past the "needing to tinker with it" stage. Now shes doing her job as Maurice intended!

Haven't driven the truck for a while, so despite being about 10 degrees this morning fired it up to go to a big breakfast meeting. Arrived at the meeting with no brakes, so truck returned on a flatbed :-(

Brent,

I did that to my Corvair this past year. A backfire, caused by points that were too close together, leading to unburned fuel in the cylinders and then in the exhaust, blew out the muffler and the short pipe. It was quite an explosion!

I ordered a new rear door for my II-A from Rovers North. I'm now trying to unscrew the rear window "frames", which seem quite rusted in place. I did manage to get the door latch mechanism off the door.

It should be painted by next week. It is way past time for me to keep running the canvas top. Brr.....

Very exciting day with the sIII. Embarked on my first semi long distance trip, to Hamburg, PA. About a 260 mile round trip without any issues. Cruised in the right lane without an OD, averaging between 50-55mph, and even hitting 60-63mph a few times.

Happy drive back home from Cabela's with a Remington 870 Wingmaster wasn't bad either! :D

This happened last weekend, before it got warm here (it's above freezing today, which feels quite unusual). The temperature was around -25C (about -10F). Took the Rover for a quick run to the store, got out, and my son remarked about all the "dripping" coming from the engine. Quick check showed antifreeze leaking rapidly from the bottom hose (I had moved the hose clamp and retightened it earlier due to antifreeze dripping when I had the radiator hose heater plugged in). The clamp wasn't working, obviously.

Quick look into the radiator showed no fluid, so I went to the nearby store for a quick antifreeze refill. Poured a new jug of antifreeze into the radiator, then got back in the Rover to hustle on home (about 8 miles away). We drove as steadily as we could, through traffic, keeping an eye on the engine temp. About halfway back, it started to get warm. But it never got too hot, and we made it back. I figure I was out of antifreeze but the outside temp kept the engine cool enough.

I never thought I'd say that -25C would be good for the Rover. Replaced the hose and clamp the next morning (in an unheated garage). Other than that, my drives are mostly uneventful. It's a dependable rig.

Finished putting in the rear main seal, thanks to help from here :)

During the move the clutch alignment tool was misplaced so I have to dig through the donor rig tomorrow and hopefully drop the motor back in and start getting her buttoned back up.

I cannot wait to be back on the road in a Series truck! The DII is nice, just doesn't have the same character.

I plan on topping up all of the 90wt oils on my 109, since I haven't checked them in weeks.

I will also measure the battery cables on the Disco for replacement this week. Interestingly, the Disco rarely starts unless I turn on the headlights. It cranks like it has a low battery or doesn't crank at all until I turn on the headlights and then it starts right up. I have already cleaned all of the grounds and added an additional ground wire between the engine and chassis. Hmmmm...

Just driving to and from work and going downtown to buy odds and sods for the house. Nothing exciting happening. Last week had -20c mornings so had it plugged in for a couple hours each morning on the block heater. I tried the 5w50 for winter and I am happy with the results. Pressure comes up very fast when starting up cold and viscosity must remain when the engine is warm. The pressure doesn't start to drop during a warm idle like regular winter weight oils.:thumb-up:

Next up when its warm, new door latches, relocate the spare tire, and hardwire a 120v inverter. I'm already looking forward to camping this summer.:D

Greased the prop shafts

Topped up the swivel pin housings

Poked around under the truck, cleaning and trying to sort out where the drips are coming from and decided that having a garage with heat, light and music is a very good thing...

i pulled off my tow plate to install my new heavy duty hitch and was reminded of how rotted it was behind it so i stopped and went to mess on badvibe's truck with him. he did a rear wheel seal. went pretty smoothly. oh and we did this in the driveway, it was a really nice day here today. after the seal work he goes for a quick oil change. that goes pretty smooth. fire it up and no oil pressure, after about 2 minutes of high idling a weird whirly whiney not quite screachy sound begins. shut it down. he replaced a purlator with a fram ph8a. mmm, de ja vu all over again as yogi would say. put the old pulator back on, oil pressure good no weird sound.

a little over a year ago i put in a fram ph8a, did 7 miles, couldn't hear the weird whirly noise because i'm on the hwy doing 60 mph and the engine seizes. you may have remember my problem was my spin on was on 180` wrong and the new fram had some sort of anti back-flow valve or what ever makes 'em one directional now.

well jeff has been using fram for years and because his prssr gauge sender was oriented the way mine was when it was wrong a couple months ago he flipped his around but the store he went to didn't carry fram so he bought the purlator. you remember the purlator? well it worked well with badvibe's spin on adapter flipped around. so jeff points out that our spin on adptrs are different, mines about the size of a really thick puck and his is a two piece much bigger but way thinner. bottom line he's gotta flip his adapter around again if he want's to use frams

Wow. Hopefully no permanent damage, though it sounds like metal-on-metal contact, so some damage must have been done. Still, sounds like you may have dodged the bullet on fatal damage!

Yesterday - new carb to air filter pipe hose and aired up the tires. Went from 7.5 mpg to 14 mpg. Cold weather had let the tires down to abnormal levels.

Wow. Hopefully no permanent damage, though it sounds like metal-on-metal contact, so some damage must have been done. Still, sounds like you may have dodged the bullet on fatal damage!

Yeah no kidding. So like scott and others found out the spin on adapter they have is the one piece type that when mounted correctly puts the sending unit pointed more to the breakfast than the bulkhead.

My adapter is the 2 piece type, I think it gets referred to as a"pancake" type. I had it mounted so that the sending unit was pointed more to the bulkhead. Hearing the woes of others from this orientation, and not realizing that there are 2 types of spin on filter adapters, I took mine off and re-mounted it so that the sending unit is pointed more toward the radiator. Couldn't find a Fram PH8A filter at the time so I used a Puralator. Oil pressure the last 2 months with the Puralator has been fine. Oil pressure the last several years with the adapter mounted with the sending unit pointed more to the the bulkhead and using Fram PH8A filters had been fine.

So now today after replacing the seal on the right rear axle I decide to do a quick oil change. Take the Puralator filter off and put on a new PH8A. Finish the oil change and fire the truck up to see no pressure on the gauge, engine starts making a bad noise after just a moment running and so I shut it down. Put the old Puralator back on, fire the truck up again and no bad noise, oil pressure reads 40 lbs at idle.

So now I'm wondering if I should have left the adapter I have mounted so that the sending unit points more to the back of the motor and I messed up by changing the orientation. Does anybody else run the "pancake" type adapter and how is it oriented? What filters are you using? Anybody know the direction of flow of oil into the filter, does oil enter the filter or exit the filter thru the center opening on the filter?

Here's a pic of the type of adapter I have:

On Saturday morning it was about 0 degF. Needed to get some insulation for the garage. Havn't driven the truck in cold weather so off I go to the barn. Took about 4 times to get her to start. Took about 5 minutes to get the cold start light to come on. Seemed like another 5 to get her to run without choke, see deflection on temp guage. While she was warming up I put the transfer case in neutral and put the main gear box in 2nd gear for a short time to move the oil a little before I got going.
After the warm up the truck ran great and plenty of heat for me. Did also lock in the hubs and drove arount the lot, about 8" of snow, ran great there also.

I used the hitch mount to anchor a come-along winch and length of chain to a 30' cottonwood tree I needed to fell. I needed to guide the tree in the right direction and it landed perfectly between my fence and the neighbors. A couple degrees error either way....and...BOOM...'spensive repairs would be needed.

Score one for my excellent novice engineering skills and the Rovers steadiness.

Looking at this (http://www.fram.com/pdf/EngineOilFiltering.pdf) on the Fram site, it would appear that oil enters the filter around the circumference and exits through the center.

To keep on topic, this week I removed the valves and checked/removed the crankshaft and prepped the block and head for a trip to the machine shop for a good cleaning and inspection.

Interesting that most of the replies to this thread are maintenance-related as opposed to the much more desireable "driving and doing fun stuff"-related. Perhaps everyone does their heavy maintenance during the winter??

Driving around in the snow and ice is routine use of my II-A, hardly worth mentioning - and I do have to earn a living through the Rover :).

I, too, live in a state with an annual inspection ritual. Some of my maintenance is getting it ready to pass this week!

However, next month is the Maine Winter Romp, a chance to hit the trails and who-knows-what conditions in the woods of central Maine.

In my case I'm coming into a little money which is paying for some much needed but previously unfordable maintenance items and I'm fine tuning some gear ratios to better fit the kinds of off road driving I do. Then when the maintenance is completed I plan to take the Dormie out on a multiple month trip.

In my case the timing has everything to do with some extra money becoming available.

Actually you may be able to help me decide what I am going to do!

I blew out the muffler the other day. When I bought the truck it came with a SS muffler with a crack in it where the tailpipe comes out of the muffler itself (see pic). At the time I just bought another mild steel muffler from our hosts to get the truck inspected. Now I figure that I will repair the SS muffler and put it back on.

I believe the crack was caused by a combo of the muffler being incorrectly supported when and the strikes which caused the dents in it.

My question is, has any one done a quick repair weld on a muffler like this and what sort of wire should I use? I am a fair/unpracticed welder using a 110V Lincoln Mig welder with fluxcore wire.

If it were me I'd just take the truck down to the local muffler shop & tell them I want a new free flow muffler and if they show you that the exhaust tubing is also gone, I suggest going with the next diameter larger pipe.

They can generally do a better job than most people can for not all that much more than buying replacement parts at retail. Over time I've become more choosy over which battles I'll fight and which I'll farm out.

Muffler shop may be an option as I have done that with my 109 P-up. But since I have the muffler (and have just had my 1 year wedding anniversary) I figured that I would try to save a bit and see if fixing is an option.

If I do go to the muffler shop I most likely would have them do the next diameter pipe as more flow definitely doesn't hurt!

I installed some rear mud flaps today and adjusted the clutch pedal play. As always, while tooling around the engine, I noticed a leak by the #3 head bolt just under the #3 fuel injector. It looks like i need to retorque the bolt. I don't feel much like taking the injector off to check the torque. Does anyone have the tool shown in the green bible that allows torqueing of the bolt without removing the injector?

Well, my Rover no longer sounds like a lobster boat! Today I replaced my muffler. As you can see by the pic, even without the backfire something tells me I would have been replacing this muffler sooner rather than later.

I called around to some welding stores and got the answer, they don't make SS welding wire for your size machine. Since I wasn't about to go and buy a new welder to fix this muffler I went ahead and gave a shot at welding the SS muffler with what I had on hand. We will see how well it lasts!

Took it for a drive and so far so good!

Replaced seal on the right rear wheel, degunged brakes, reassembled
Repaired and replaced broken alternator mount
Oil change and re-oriented the spin off adapter so I don't burn up my motor like someone I know.....
Mounted bracket to put spare tire behind the bulkhead

The last "repairs" were done last week at the annual state inspection. The local mechanic found loose nuts on the propshaft where it attaches to the transmission brake assembly, and loose nuts on a spring hanger plate. Otherwise, everything was fine. I need to replace the dodgy windshield wiper blades, but that's it for now.

We installed new Pro Comp shocks on my IIA 88. The old shocks were rusting into bits, so it was time for them to go. It now rides just about exactly the same as before, but I feel better about it. I also found the reason my parking brake doesn't seem to be holding is the clevis pin had fallen out of the linkage and the lever wasn't connected to anything! New clevis pin, and we're back to a kinda-sorta parking brake. Also, after advice from Mike at RN and some other well wishers (including Jeff Aronson) I discovered the reason my fuel and temp gauges both suddenly quit is that their power wire came unplugged from the fuse box. Since I'm such an electrical genius that only took me about a month to sort out.

The other Rover related advancement this week was taking my old slides from my Pan-American Highway trip in 2000 to the digital converter to get them put on a CD. It will be fun reminiscing about that trip. Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in a 69 Series IIA!

Good wrenching, everyone.

Rob is there something blocking your exhaust that is making the gaskets go bad?

rwollschlager
01-26-2010, 05:32 PM
no its my fault completly. The first time i took them off was to replace all the gaskets, but i did not tighten the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold enough, so i started it up and it leaked worse than before i started the repairs.
At the time i couldnt figure it out and i needed to get to school so i just drove it, when i got there i noticed pieces of the gasket blown out, and the four brass nuts were loose. Lesson learned, and should be all fine and good tmrw.

today i finally wrapped up my persistent exhaust leak. The square gasket between the intake and the exhaust manifold was the culprit. Installed with new hard ware and some never-seize.

Stepped on the clutch pedal to take it for a spin and shorted out the headlight dimmer switch on the floor with some blue sparks (no... i was not wearing metal shoes lol). 1 30amp fuse later and its good to go. The 109 will be staring in a knock off movie of "man vs. wild" for my friends skit for our school's talent show. He's gonna win :thumb-up:

Adjusted my points, in the process I must have bumped the wire from the condenser to the distributor housing and it broke...but not very apparent. After about 2 hours of frustration I found it. Evidently it was crimped too tight at the factory (dizzy is 3 months old aftermarket) so It's a good thing I'm clumsy as this was a breakdown waiting to happen. She's back up and purring again.

After buying my first Series Land Rover 2-1/2 years ago I finally brought (trailered) it home after it sat at my Moms for 1-1/2. I started filling fluids and they started running out the TC almost as fast as I was putting it in. Upon further inspection found the front and rear output seals were shot along with the front output shaft. So I pulled the TC and started tearing it down only to find that it was going to cost me more in parts than to buy a "good" used one. Found a used one from Ray at Rover Drive and it's been sitting on the garage floor since I brought it home from Canada about 10 months ago. The plan is to replace the seals and gaskets, which I bought about a month ago. I finally got the thing up on the work bench yesterday and got the front and rear output seals replaced.

For the last couple of weeks I've been working towards replacing the floor wells and while removing the right side I discovered the lower door post was shot, haven't got to the left side yet.

We got snow this weekend that turned to ice so I'm glad the Rover is tucked away in the garage right now awating new fuel filters. I would have replaced them this weekend but it was too dang cold in the garage- time to get a little ceramic heater and some insulated Dickies.

Bled the Clutch system again, seems like that is becoming an every five day thing. Cursed at the inadiquate heat for my 16 mile drive home. Went off roading on one of the local trails to see if she was up to digging her way through 13"of virgin snow. Failed me not. Drove home and discovered that my parking spot is a little steep so I'll have to adjust the parking brake this morning once it warms up above 10 deg. Try and figure out why clutch keeps gaining air in system.

It's not what I did but what the better half did. I went off skiing yesterday in the Subaru. Left the Rover home in the unheated garage where it lives. Wife found out she needed some thread something urgent and - faced with a two mile walk in the cold - she fired up the Rover and drove it out. I need to preface the significance of this by noting that, while she is very accepting of my Rover and me taking care of it, she's also clear that it's "mine". She's willing to go for rides but that's where it stops. I'm pleased to report that the SIII didn't let her (or me) down, even though she didn't know where the manual choke was and drove the thing without it. She said she had to plug in the radiator hose heater for half and hour before it would run.

This week:
The main thing was troubleshooting a persistent issue that essentially made the Rover un-drivable. Downshifting to align transmission was impossible :nono:(clutch spin?) - curiously, it was a problem only when hot, or if temps were above freezing.

1) Got fuel sender working again.:thumb-up:
2) Spherical Bearing - Slave Cylinder Mounting Bracket - Bodged together in lieu of parts - have parts now just haven't gotten to it.:o
3) New Starter Switch (push type).
4) Cleaned shot glass.

Today:
1) New transmission mounts.
2) New Clutch flex hose.
3) Fuel filter.

The flex hose seems to have done the trick - we shall see. Productive week regardless.

started the process of wiring up the rear window defoger (yeah, thats right, how slick is that?!?!).
The PO installed glass with resistance strips embedded. The day I got the truck I swapped the hard top for soft top and disconnected them. Took some time today to rebuild those connections only to discover that the hot leads that run to the back of the truck are not working. I would have fixed that and my weather seals today, but it has not stopped snowing for 48 hours, and once my hands went numb it was time to quit tinkering and start driving around!

Well in the snow (as is typical this time of year) I cleaned the plugs (seem to have a grey/white build-up, not sure about that) reset my point gap which was .006 back to .015 and cleaned the carbon off the cap and rotor. Tightened the exhaust manifold and heater supply hose clamps at the coil. Checked the fan belt and checked my tappet clearence (.010) and discovered that I have an oil leak from the back of my motor where the oil supply tube is. I'll order that crush washer for the banjo bolt. Still have a Exhaust manifold leak at the exhaust pipe connection, which I blame on an errant tree. Started rebuilding a wiring harness for the back so when I pull off the hard top I'll still have my reverse lights and tried to wire in a new heater that's on order. All in all not a bad days worth of attention for the series III. I even took it out to discover if the four-wheel drive was working by taking my little truck down an ATV trail which I discovered 1/2 mile in, was now blocked by a larger tree. Tested Camel Trophy Brush guard today too. Very effective on smaller trees....

none of my jobs, no matter how simple seem to get done in a day. last saturday i removed the tow plate and the pintle hook i had mounted on it last august. when doing that job i noticed a bit of rust in the xmbr behind the plate.

so back to saturday, i cut out the rust and ended with softball size hole in both the front & rear surfaces of the xmber. fab some reinforcement pieces using 2' angle iron, 1/4" plate and a skin for the outer surface of the rear xmbr. was planning on weld'n it all on but not enough time.

last night welded in the reinforcement pieces insid the xmber and drilled the 1/4" plate for the under the truck side of the and drilled the skin for the outside of the xmbr and bolted them on and decided welding these on will have to wait for another saturday.

so it looks like the repair of my rear xmbr is going to take at least 3 days with some week long rest periods in between.

I adjusted the brakes on the QE I and found that the pedal travel is fine, but the brakes probably need new shoes all around. Tomorrow morning I load it up with straps and rope for the Maine Winter Romp.

I fired up the QM I for the first time in a few months. I took off the coil wire to clean up the corrosion inside the coil tip, and then hit the starter button without turning on the ignition. Once I saw some oil pressure, I tried to start the car. It took a shot of dry gas down the carb to get it running, but immediately, it smoothed right out. A tip of the cap to the original Solex carb.

I finished installing a new master cylinder by bench bleeding it, but there was a lot of air in the sytem. The brake bleeder screws are really corroded in place, so this is going to take a while.

Yesterday I converted my truck over to LED turn signals, parking, brake & tail lights. It was straight forward but I did need a new electronic flasher module and when I opened up my front lights I discovered lots of rust on the sockets. I replaced all the front sockets as well.

Geeezzzzz, I'm a little worried about the front parking lights which I have wired to be on then the headlamps are on as well as in the park position. They are so bright with the lens over them that you could almost drive by them and they spread light evenly all over the place.

I'm also fabricating new radiator mounts for my new aluminum cross flow radiator. When the old one died I sent it back to the manufacturer for their analysis of why it died. Their conclusion was that the radiator was shook to death. Too many hours on washboard roads and bouncing around on trails testing how well shocks handled fluid heating. I used clamps with hard rubber between the clamps & radiator. :(

I have the new bottom mount in, the radiator mounted and connected and the new top mount should be fabricated, welded, & notches cut before the end of today. The radiator will sit in full length top and bottom channels with closed foam padding.

Truck had started running roughly over the last couple of weeks. Occassional backfires etc. Changed fuel filter and messed with timing which helped a bit but didn't cure the problem. I've had distributor issues in the past so I broke down and bought a 45d last week to replace my tired 25d.

My bud scott came by yesterday to show off his repaired rear cross member and pintle mount and pick up his Sankey which I had. So we toss the new dizzy in, beer time it, and hit the road to go move some windows from his house to his brothers place.

Truck runs good to scott's place across town. We get the windows loaded in the Sankey on scott's 88. I'm following in my truck and we head for Terry's place. After a couple of blocks scott pulls over to check the tie downs on everything. While doing that my truck dies and won't restart. Change fuel filter, check gap on the points, try re-timing by ear, spray lots of carb cleaner thru the carb, and can't get my 88 to restart. Looking into the carb while turning the truck over I can see actual drops of gas in the carb, not a steady stream. So I think my old Rochester is the culprit now.

End up towing my 88 to Terry's and I'm going to call the local carb guru place to see about the Rochester. I did a rebuild kit a couple of years ago so it got new gaskets and stuff but not truly a "rebuild."

scott loaned me his 88 and offered me the use of his LR3 but honestly I've driven old iron for so long, my 88 is a '64 and my new truck is a '77, I'm intimidated by trucks that are smarter than me.....

Out collecting sap with my '65 and notice the LF dragging a bit. Sat AM, before breakfast is even a concept, took off the drum. Wheel cylinder doesn't want to go back in. Compress with BA channelocks and it comes back out, so bleed a bit of air. Still no joy. Changed the hose which is looking well beyond it's sell-by date, and things are looking promising, but still a stiff spot. Pop the piston to see a nice rusty ridge.
2 out of 3 stones in the wheel cylinder hone look almost as bad as the cylinder, so call george for a new pair of cylinders. I hate when the fix means opening the wallet.

If you're only at the paint-stripping stage, why worry about puting the mirrors on now?
...because military vehicles were usually painted immediately & often after rolling off the assembly line. Stripping the military-applied paint often reveals factory paint in exceptionally good condition for its age. So, roverlandpark is giving his vehicle a reverse paint job. With the paint stripped back, I'll have a more tidy looking vehicle to drive around for the next few months as I get more parts together for the restoration. Also, the Lightweight had only one mirror and it and the rear-view mirror were shot. I'm not complaining, I like finding excuses to buy parts...

Finished removing rear axle from '97 Disco this evening. Took care of front this past weekend. Taking both to welder to remove coil fixings for a parabolic set up. Flip, my retired pipe welder and a real magician, will work on finishing mounts for rebuilt Defender 200tdi, new r380 (short bell housing), and the Disco's lt230. Getting closer...

I pulled the rear output flange in order to clean and refurbish my tranny brake. At first look did not even find a seal..perhaps why it is leaking into the drum and brake assembly, but it may be rotten/chewed up/disintegrated somewhere :-)
Next - remove the whole package that contains the pads and pistons. Oh - then time to inventory check all bolts, springs, seals for a RN order. What a mess - but fun.

I somehow blew out the rear door glass on my 109 while driving off road at moderate speed the other day...I hit a series of holes that apparently were perfectly spaced apart and just deep enough to create a vibration my glass just couldnt handle...The unfortunate aspect to this is that it was heated glass...Not cheap.

So today was spent installing the replacement and boosting my door seal rain repelling abilities with some low profile window insulation that I actually mounted on the door side...Its looks like a factory finish and not one draft or drip in the truck (hose tested)...Bingo.:thumb-up:

Meanwhile headlights not working on front right low. Re did all connections all OK. Made one set of side markers from the parts on truck, parts from my other SIII and one part from Yank (thanks). Decided to check for the bulb type on the Hella headlights that came with truck, can of worms, reconditioned headlight bucket again parts from both trucks gave me one servicable unit. Passenger side in much better shape. Reassemble headlight / rewire / done with lights.

Swapped out Series II suffix a transmission for rebuilt Series IIa unit. Almost done- just need to adjust clutch slave, fill box with 75w 90, reinstall the seat box, tunnel cover and floors. Found a really nice Snap-On 15/16" open end box wrench lodged in between the gas tank and outrigger from the guy who previously worked on the Rover. At first I thought I'd keep it- but he's a nice guy so I guess I'll send it back to him. Hopefully good karma will come out of this and I'll enjoy a trouble free transmission for many years!

Decided today was the day to replace 'warm' ammeter with Voltmeter.
Opened dash for first time. Mistake. Big mistake. Found 14 dead wire ends hanging in midair....no ideas if they were hooked to anything or not.

Requires removal of rest of dash facia.

Mistake #2.
More of the same. In the following search I found lotsa goodies to play with(fix). Lotsa worn out wires/switches/connections, and about 20 lbs of useless wire(removed), unconnected ground wires. Both fuse boxes shot, and repaired with banjo string and floor wax.Battery ground shot(terminal end). Spent 9 hours on it, and got brighter headlights so far. At least another 9 to go. The terminals connecting the ammeter were probably original, and absolutely frightnening to look at. No wonder they were HOT...poor things. They had to be within minutes of just welding the whole bailawick together!
Started at noon....wrapped at midnight. 3 hours for dinner..needed it. I am a porky american, and it's very wearying to squirm into the necessary positions to work on the half removed dashes, and the fuseboxes(alone, so una to remove the hood). If only I was 30 again, and 150lbs!!! The only reason I'm still sane, is that I'm retired. Should have just used a hedge trimmer to get the wires out, and replaced with a harness, but that's not much of a challenge. This is...and it's real fun to find an 'AHA' type thing like the bad terminal ends, and loose grounds.:D Whatta hoot.

I pimped my IIa out to an outdoor catalog product shoot. I have a friend that is a photographer and he called me to rent my Rover for a catalog shoot in April. The tough part is that he's shooting the fall catalog and is trying to find a location that won't look too spring. He took some shots after I got it and apparently his boss loved the idea of using it as a prop. I'll get something like $100, probably as a gift cert to the company but I don't really care as it will cool to see it in the pic's.

This a good motivator to get the new seats order and installed as well as either getting a new tank or getting the old one cleaned out.

At the moment I am not going to take the time to unhook every last wire so it by no means will look like the wiring that some folks on this forum have done. I'll wait for a more complete overhaul to sink my teeth into that.

I drained and pulled my tank off last night to get it cleaned and sealed this week. I made a rare wise decision to get a pump siphon to drain the tank with-that saved me a lot of trouble. The tank looks pretty good inside save for a bunch of loose crud-i.e. I don't see rust or old gummy fuel. As nature will dictate there was one badly seized bolt holding the tank that I had to drill out but overall it went pretty smoothly. Next up-clean and paint the seat brackets and install new seats!

Not today, but a few days ago, I replaced one of the nubbin's heater hoses on my Stage One.

On a test drive to verify that I fixed my top end oil leak I noticed water squirting and dripping under the bonnet. A quick tear down revealed that I must have overtightened an already worn out heater hose.

That blasted leak completely drained the entire system (plus 2 litres of water I added to it) on the drive home.

... and I have to ask!!! Why did Nigel and Liam design and build the stoopid Land Rover with heater hoses that plug into 3/4" pipes on one end and 1/2" pipes on the other? This makes it so you can not easliy put an auto parts store standard piece of heater hose in its place.

Its a british sense of humour thing. You can easily get round this by buying two adapters from your local hardware store. You want a 3/4" male hose with female NPT adapter plus a 1/2" male hose to matching male NPT adapter. Screw the two together and install. You won't have to buy any more fancy hoses in the future.

Over the last week, in the drive to work, the Rover had started making some alarming noises from the back area (grinding/squeaking), though only on occasion, usually in a left turn or when the frame was flexed. I couldn't find anything wrong during the week, so it had to wait until yesterday. Sliding around on my back with a shoplight, looking for something (and trying not to get oiled in the process), I finally found the problem - the long bolt that holds the top end of the right rear shock absorber was almost out. I figure the only reason the bolt was still there was because of the tire. My shock was almost (but not completely) detached. I figured the lock nut that went on the other end was long gone and I'd have to hunt around town to find a match. But in this case, and I've no idea why, I found it on the garage floor about three feet away. I cleaned up the grease from everything and put it back together. I had to reseat the top of the shock absorber. And I checked the other side, just in case (it was fine).

I don't think it would have done the truck any good had the top of the shock become detached at speed. I'm mostly bothering to write this up because I was amazed (and lucky) that the nut was in my garage and not on the road. It's hard to find parts of any kind for a SIII in Calgary.

Im sitting in my office looking at my grease stained hands on the keyboard... and I dont have a lot to show for it :D

My dad and I spent the weekend doing some father son bonding over (or under) the Rover. We learned a lot so thats always a positive.

We started with, well, the starter. We got the field magnets and armature free from the reduction gears (right terms?) and cleaned everything well, but its still spinning without engaging.

We spent the rest of the time on the rear shocks...talk about hard. The frame bolts were easy. But the cotter pin and washer assembly on the axle mounts were so fused it was like someone had tack wielded them. We had to drill them (went through 6 bits)...but the hardest part was getting the rubber bushings compressed enough to put new cotter pins in place. Im sure there is a trick, but clamps weren't it.

I also swapped the hard top for the soft top - think I might just go year-round with the soft top and see how bad it is in winter. I love the look of the hard top, but mine is just too ugly and swapping isnt much fun.

All in all, a good educational weekend, but still a long way to go. Need to replace the starter before I can tackle the newly resurrected idle issue.

Put in my newish speedometer, now my cold start light glows dimly when ever the truck is running...guess it's back in to look for a loose ground? Changed out the themostat, the old one was stuck open all winter but I just thought my radiator was very very efficient!

Tonight I install my Gen-u-ine LR rear springs and new shocks all around, no more low-rider for me! (Nick, should I pick up some drill bits?)

Oh, drank beer & smoked cigars in the garage.

Good luck with the shocks! Suggest the cobalt drill bits :D
When you break the last one, call me, I'll bring some along with more beer and cigars ;)

Can't wait to hear about your springs - noticed that mine are getting a bit rusty and was trying to figure out what replacing them would be like. You'll have to tell us about the experience.

Picked up the cleaned and sealed tank, got some grade 8 nuts and bolts to replace the rusted ones and started getting the tank back in. I ended up mostly cleaning my fuel pickup and sender as they were both ugly. I thought the sender was toast but some time and effort revealed it was just very dirty so that save me some $$. I'll let the sender sit overnight with some WD on it and finish cleaning it tomorrow so I should have the tank back in shortly.

Drove to work today ( that happens most days ) and will put the soft top on this weekend!!!! Spring has finally arrived on the Canadien border...:thumb-up:

Last night while bolting up the driver side swivell, I broke to yack on the phone. When I got done, I inserted the axle, and to my dismay, it jamed. When I yanked it out, I found that the inner bearing (the one on the outside of the axle tube) had decided to ****e itself. Rollers everywhere, including, yes, in the axle tube and probably pushed into the diff housing. All I can figure is that i must have knicked it somehow inserting the axle. It was about 1am, and I was tired and hurrying. I ordered the bearing this morning, along with gaskets (including the one for the diff).

Well after driving around with the Soft top on, for about a week I fitted the hard top again  nice and quiet, I don't think I will fit the soft top again this year.

Instead of the sideways facing seats I also fitted forward facing load area seats, not the original seats, but a home made solution, next is finishing the 3-point harnes for the load area seats (I'm still waiting for the mounting brackets and I need some seatcovers :sly: )

Here are some more shots. These are the parts i got for 200 bucks! pretty good deal considering i was going to buy new stuff until i found this guy. Just before i left i came across this series 3 motor and tranny just sitting on the ground in a barn full of horse stuff. Thats also the 1970 range rover with a crazy low build number in the 300's. If there are two heater hoses right next to each other on the same motor, and one blows out. How long before the one right next to it blows out.....

... well today is April 3rd.... that makes it about 14 days or so. (sigh) :o

Another round of replacement hose and new coolant added.:thumb-up:

I used the 109 to move 2 tons of mulch (in 100#bags, two trips) and then dragged several very heavy tree stumps into our burn pile using the newly installed Warn 8274 winch on a Pangolin winch bumper. At least the first use of the winch wasn't a self recovery....

I installed a pair of toggle switches into the small aux center panel (SIII) to operate the winch from inside the cab. One 'on-off' switch is power, and the other momentary 'on-off-on' switch is cable in and out. I also installed a 300 amp cut off switch at the grill.

I now have the same winch and bumper on the wife's V8 109, but need to complete the wiring.

We ran the '96 Disco to town, where it started to run very poorly and blow oil smoke, with the 'check engine' light flashing on and off. Hadn't seen that before.... Managed to get it home, but it was missing badly and down on power. Hmmm, something wrong, me thinks....

Changed oil and filter, checked all 90W levels and topped up as needed, replaced a u joint in my front drive shaft and dare I say it? I hand washed the old girl with a real car wash mit and everything instead of the usual blast with the pressure washer.

Spent three years neglecting the truck after it immediately stopped working after coming back from a mechanic I sent it to while I was deployed (mistake). Got back to work on it, ordered some more parts and tried to get it to fire up. Looks like a condensor has gone bad. Parts should be here this weekend to fix it and then its off to the next problem... I remember the mechanic screwing with the clutch pedal so it barely travels now... will have to fix that... guess the lesson is don't let someone else work on your truck.....

When we remodeled the house we used to say "that should only take an hour at most..." three days later we'd be done. It became a running joke. Long story short, I don't ever think that my rover will be done :)

Kudos on the new shocks!

I angered the Rover Gods! On the way home from work I sputtered and dies...smelled fuel real strong, fuel filter almost empty. Climbed under the truck and found my newer fuel line was incorrectly routed (by me, duh!) and rubbed a small "weeping hole" in the line, allowing air in the line. Amazingly, months ago I threw some extra fule line in the tool box under the seat so a quick fix and I was back on the road again. I will never again be so foolish as to think I will ever be done with this truck. That's a good thing....right?

I spent some time on both my rovers this last weekend. One is going down the road to a new owner next week so I finshed a few very minor tidying up items, installed the second back seat and started getting ready to install the defender mirror I've had for it.
On my new to me truck I removed the floors, tunnel cover and bulkhead cowling. The truck does not always downshift well from 3rd to 2nd, kind of gets stuck. The PO said it was due to a worn shifter ball. I pulled the shifter and it is in real bad shape. Ordered a new shifter lever, should have it by weekend to see if this fixes the problem. If you think a rovers heat is poor try driving one around without the tunnel cover in the rain, fun!

Finished up my quasi repair of the starter. Its still only engaging about 60% of the time, but thats a big improvement. I dont feel like I'd be stranded driving it around town...well, any more than usual.

On our test ride I noticed that the new rear shocks made a huge difference. Its like taking a small jet through a thunderstorm rather than a cessna 172... This was the first time driving it since swapping tops and I'd forgotten how much worse it tracks when I move the spare off the rear door to behind the bulkhead...really hard to keep it in a straight line. Maybe it will get better when I replace the front shocks?

I've still got some idle and dieseling issues and its clear that the starter is on its way to needing a new gear asap... but there's progress none the less.

The best part about our ride tonight was our newest passenger - meet Ippa! We got her this week from the SPCA
