LR Ser III Salibury Rear brakes

Below are pics of a Salisbury rear axle I'm redoing to swap into an 88.

Look at the spacer on the inside of the backing plate. Why is that needed? and why is the LR parts diagram showing it on the other side of the backing plate?

Just a shot in the dark

My guess is that someone put it together incorrectly or maybe had wider tires and did this to bring the tires back within the bodywork?

That is an oil collector, and it is installed correctly. Its purpose is to collect any oil that drips from the hub seal and direct it out a hole in the brake backing plate. This keeps the brakes from becoming contaminated with oil.

Thanks for the info and pics. I've not seen that cross section in any of the LR publications I have. Very detailed. Where is it from?

I went back to the backing plates and Yes there was a hidden small 5/16 - 3/8 diameter hole at BDC, aligned with a notch in the spindle.

That type of British engineering makes me laugh. While it probably works just fine, though the holes on mine were plugged w/ dirt/rust, it seems like a band-aide fix to another problem. In some regards it pretty creative since I've had leaky wheel bearing seals on other solid axle vehicles that do wet the brake pads.

I often wondered why LR just didn't add brackets in the tub for spare axle shafts, rather then strengthen the STD LR rear axle.
