Hi all,

last few months i´ve been bagging my head on the wall as i cannot find the cause of my problem.
i got a 2002 defender Td5. sometimes it is difficult to start. the weather or time of the day has nothing to do with it.
sometimes it will start in a cold morning by the first turn of the starter motor but at noon it will start at 2nd or 3rd attempt (if i am lucky).
i´ve been to the mechanic and checked the ECU using aland rover diagnostics with no problem reported. i have elrectrical installation and battery check with no error.
i have changed the ejector harness just to be sure.
if it was a sensor issue it should show an alarm on diagnostics, right?
the only thing that i noticed (i am not sure if it was just luck), when it had difficulty in starting, if i pushed down the fuel pump replay while starting it was ok.
what i am not sure about is if the fuel pump and main relay are correct. as i got the car second hand, i think they have been changed as they have "Ford" brand on them. (land rover / bmw used ford parts?)
did any1 have the same strange starting problem?
can any1 confirm which are the correct replays for fuel pump and main relay?

Sounds like an diagnostic job to me. I would be specifically looking at the injuector pressure. It's not uncommon for them to leak. Especially if they have been taken out.

I didn't think the Td5 was commonly available over there?

hi spacemutt,

thanks for the reply.
how can i check the injectors pressure or if they are leaking?
the diagnostic tool does not show any problems....

The only way I've seen it done is with a proper diagnostic machine (Autologic) and they probably cost more than the car...

Is there a specialist near you?

there is a specialist so i will give it a try there

i found some chap diagnostic tools on the web for normal checkups of the ECU but they are OBDII. the TD5 ECU is not OBDII compliant, right?
do you know any "cheap" tools as most of what i found are a bit expensive?

Trying not to tread on our host's toes... but Bearmach do a diagnostic machine that I believe is Land Rover specific.

Click here for info. (http://www.bearmach.com/downloads/Diagnostic/Hawkeye_v3and4_GB.pdf)

If you want me to reconment a Bearmach retailer I can. But don't want to break forum rules. :p
