    Intermediate shaft backed out?

After a bit of off roading this weekend in the sIIA 109, the t-case was leaking alot of oil. Upon inspection, I noticed the intermediate shaft of the transfer case was sticking out, probably 1/8" -1/4" to far. I am going to remove the t-case cover, and inspect to make sure the thrust washers and other spacers are in place and what not before I push the shaft back into place, but any ideas as to what could have caused this?

    thanks,
    -Rob

I may have an earlier version, but my intermediate shaft (which I just replaced) is held in by a flat plate bolted to the back of the case. One edge of the flat plate fits into a groove near the end of the intermediate shaft and keeps it from moving fore and aft. So, the intermediate shaft sticks out beyond the case by a quarter inch or so, when fitted correctly.

That's how it should be set in place. I would remove the transfer box bottom pan and just have a look. Also sometimes the bolts on these pans get loose and start to leak more.
