is this a standard gear shifter for a '71 IIa? in all the manuals they show a shifter with 2 bends rather than the single bend near the bottom.

also note the large gap in the level base (about 1/2 inch space). the RN catalog shows an o-ring for the lever base, but it seems like an o-ring would be too small this. is there another part I should be looking for?

That's a series 3 shifter. They made a different type for a little while (not sure the time period) that had a rubber ball that covered the bottom of the shifter instead of just having the normal rubber o-ring type. the purpose of this was to cut down on rattling noise but were dropped because the nobs would wear and fall off.

It appears that the green neoprene bsll-end has seperated from the end of the gear lever.
The selection of gears must be difficult and the lever probably rattles, other than sourcing locally an O ring to fit the groove a new lever would be in order.

It looks like you could get creative with some rubber fuel or heater hose to get this working properly again.
