View Full Version : Turbo Add-On to 2.25 Diesel?

Okay, this is just idle curiousity, but has anyone ever seen the stock 2.25 diesel modified with a turbocharger? I would guess that bigger injectors would be needed, but otherwise can't see a reason why it wouldn't work out okay. Thanks.

there was an aftermarket kit for this back in the 80s. Ive seen a few with corvair turbos on them as well. They arent designed to be turbo charged, if you do it, keep the boost low

Earlier 2.25L engines had three main bearings. Land Rover did not add a turbo to their diesels until after they modified the bottom end to 5 main bearings.

You can draw you own conclusions as to why the turbo came after the introduction of the 5 main 2.25L diesel engine.

I wouldnt turbo a 5mb 2.25 D either . . .

Oh this is all idle curiousity. I am well aware of the fact these trucks are not speed demons. TeriAnn, by chance do you know the serial number of the blocks when the 2.25 went to 5 mains?

i'm planning a 200tdi conversion. and i heard the 200 and the 5 mb 2.25 are similar. but the 200 has had some engineering done to it to strength the block

for what it is worth the 2.25 diesel = 10J
5mb 2.25d= 11J
2.5 diesel= 12J
2.5td=19J
----------------------------
200tdi=12L
300tdi= 21L
2.25p= 23L
2.5 petrol= 17h

I have rarely if ever heard anyone use the last 4 designations.

The transition from 3MB to 5 MB 2.25 happened somewhere around 1980. The blocks look different externally so it is easy to tell them apart. the 5mb engines have webbeing cast into the block to reinforce them- they are also supposedly cast thinner?

The 200tdi and 300tdi are "similar" blocks but are reinforced with an aluminum ladder thing down over the bearing caps.

Also the 3 bearing engines are normally duck egg green, where-as the 5 bearing engines are normally red. Unless ex-MoD then they are normally pasted in duck egg green...

Apart from the bearing problem, etc, you will also melt the pistons as they aren't designed for the bigger burn of a turbo engine.

The same goes for trying to turbo and 2.5 n/a.

Here's how to check if your 2.25 engine is a 3 or 5 main bearing.


1. Zig zag VVVVVV markings on the side of the engine block just above the engine oil sump = 5 main bearing.

2. Red brown engine block = 5 main bearing. (the colors are not always correct, mine is a 3 main bearing with red block :cool: )




3. None Zig zag markings on the side on of the engine block just above the engine oil sump = 3 main bearing.

4. Turquoise Green engine block = 3 main bearing.



If I was going to fit a turbo to a 2,25 diesel (which I would not do) I would fit an intercooler too.
In my opinion there is no other Turbo engine for a Land Rover that will cope with a Turbo before the 200 TDi was introduced

Lalo that answers my question quite succinctly without dropping the pan. It's a 3 main engine without a doubt, thanks!
