building a mount for our new winch on our '68 ambulance. the front bumper has a 4 bolt pattern reinforced area. My guess is a hitch of some sort? Any ideas?

mine has ( i really like say that when talking about the ambulance) one of the UKish ball hitches on the front bumper

The military bumpers would have been fitted with a pintle hitch.

The military front bumpers had provisions for a pintle hitch. However, it's my understanding that the front hitch was never intended for real towing - it was only meant to be used for "nosing in" trailers.

There were tow poles(NATO rigid bar) used for recovery using the front pintle hitches too. Think of a solid bar with a lunette on either end and you have an idea what it looked like. Howard Smith- the guy who does Guy Fawkes in NY has one that was apparently part of his 101FC wrecker's kit.

That makes sense our Unimog has a quite heavy one. Anyone had a spare military pintle hitch they might like to sell?
