lit'l thingies on a new pressure plate

i just installed a new clutch and prsr plt. the prsr plt came with 3 red clips bolted to the back side. it seems i read before throwing out the instructions that after installing remove these clips. something to do with compressing the springs 'til you get it bolted in. two questions. am i remembering the instructions correctly? and i noticed on the old prsr plt i replaced that these clips were still in place, could that have led to an early death of the clutch the prv ownr insalled?
