My Series ('63 SIIA, 2.25 Petrol) has been running well... up until a couple of days ago. Rather suddenly there is a loud 'popping' sound from the exhaust manifold area: sounds like i'm driving old tractor or a diesel Series http://www.vtxs.org/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif

I've looked for the source of what I assume is an exhaust system / exhaust manifold leek but haven't been able to find anything amiss. Everything looks fine, sounds terrible.

Don't know what to do. Damn http://www.vtxs.org/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif

It could be the exhaust manifold gasket or a cracked exhaust manifold, wich is very common, especially after fitting a new exhaust.

Could also be this gasket, I tried that once.

Okay, I will be investigating further.

Can I remove the exhaust manifold without also removing the intake manifold ?

I see that my question about taking the exhaust manifold off without removing the intake manifold is answered in the Green Bible = NO :(

Such as life.

I'd recommend while you've got the exhaust manifold off, wrap it in exhaust wrap. Try to get some "low profile" wrap, it'll be easier to re-install.

Following up: the exhaust manifold appears to be okay, but the manifold gasket is shot. New one is on its way (from RN) and hopefully my Series will be running quietly again soon (work to be done by a real mechanic, not me :p )
