A friend gave me a hi lift jack today.. I don't off road much, so I never had one. It jacks up fine but drops the vehicle when letting it down...Dumb question: Shouldn't you have to jack it down 1 notch at a time? This is an older jack made in USA.......

Make sure both pins and their actuators are working properly and lubricated. With weight on the jack, it should be going down one notch at a time until fully unloaded.

That's right.. if there is NO weight on the jack it will just drop and that is normal. Dropping WITH weight? Better investigate why before putting it use.. they like lube.
At worst rebuild kits are cheap and something you may just want to do anyway with a jack of unknown history.
Great tool though. A man should have one in his shop whether he off-roads or not.
