another tire ?

I saw a set of 215/85/16 tire's the other day and thought they would look good on the Series 3. Anyone ever use this size befor?

I use a set of these. I like them because they are skinny and can be had cheap. They are roughly the same diameter as the old 7x16. They look not too bad either. They look their best on a series 1.

I have them on my 66 IIa. I'm away from my computer, but will try and post picks in a few days. I think they look great ona series rig. They are tall, but skinny, which allows for easier steering, and a very traditional series look.

Not sure what the average tire diameters are for the 215s or the 7.50s but my 235 85 16s stand 31" or 31.5" tall and are a fair bit wider than the original 750x16. Note the relationship between the tires and the rear wheelarch in these pics:

With 235 85 R16s / NATO steel wheels on the same Rover (6 years later). Don't know if the rim offset is different, but it is certainly wider to accomodate the wider tire correctly:

They are wider and have a greater offset, that is probably the biggest difference between those two photos.

If you are just bombing around town, the 215/85s will be nice. Better acceleration and easier to turn.

Off roading...a 235/85/16 tire would be a little bit better.

I think top end is a lost cause until a can afford a OD or something. I hope to use the truck on back roads and occasional off roading nothing to crazy.

I think the 235's look a little to wide.

I use my truck for exactly the same purpose Yank, I do have an overdrive, and a fresh engine, the highway speeds are about as good as you could expect with a series. My experience is that wide tires float in mud, where a narrower tire will dig better to find the solid base better. I guess I can't air down to get as wide a footprint as a 235, but I'll take it, as ir steers much better with the 215s.

FWIW.....

My 86 Ford dually runs the 215/85 (stock) which are far LESS popular than the 235's. If you concerned about availability, the 235's are out there in great numbers, the 215's...not so much.

i'd love a 215 90 or 95 with a load range e and a semi aggressive tread but to get 32s i gotta go with 235 85s

Just an FYI. Pep Boys has a nice tire for $130. The Definity Dakota M/T. Real nice heavy treads. And they are buy three get one free. I will put some pics on Flickr.
