    Horn button options

The horn button (plastic piece) on my IIa is crumbling and finally fell off. I haven't seen these on the usual sites and I am looking for NOS and used.

Have any of you made one yourself or found something that will work in the banjo style wheel?

i've made one. ain't hard if ya still have the spring and brass locking ring thing. first one was made from an empty bottle of that orange hand cleaner stuff. worked great except it was just a tad to small. second one made from another plast bottle, some car polish stuff i think. cut it a bit bigger and it's been about a year and hasn't fallen out yet

I do still have the spring and star shaped piece and looking at the plastic part it does look like the bottom of a spray paint can top or something like that. I saw some on a british site but haven't found one here yet.

If I can figure out how to do the edges I bet one out of some nice teak would be very attractive.

If you could find someone with one of these http://www.makerbot.com/ I bet it would be easy to replicate. They used to have a directory of people willing to make things...

I've often wished I had one just for little one off fabrication parts...

Which steering wheel are you looking for a horn button for?

Jim and Bertha, It's the old style "banjo wheel" that I have on my 64 IIa. If either of you have one that fits please PM me. (the white buckets are no longer in place-I've got new deluxe trim low backs now)

Here are two pics of a perfect button I removed from an early Banjo type horn switch today. I think it would be easy to duplicate by making a mold with two part RTV and the original button. A number of duplicates could then be cast using polyurethane casting resin before the mold deforms.

Any hi tech model makers out there?....

I would be glad to loan the button to someone willing to cast a few.

I plan on having the rusty button housing galvanized in a future galvy run.

                      Bob

Interesting project Bob. "Bertha" has a used one he is going to send me this week. If it doesn't work I might want to get in on the mold. My metal surround is in pretty good shape, just pitted so I'm going to pull that off while the center is out and see how clean I can get it.
