Hello, new to the forum, and I have a question. can anyone tell me if there is a visual difference, or a different part number between a 8.1 head and a 7.1 head?

How can I tell them apart?

Thanks, Cristian

there're some threads here w/ pics, do a search. but if ya don't need pics look between #2 & #3 on the top between the valve cover and manifolds. there may be a raise area about an inch wide, kind of like a little pennisula extending from under the valve cover. if it doesn't have one of these then it's a 7:1 but if it does and there's a 7 stamp on to it, it's still just a 7:1 but yet another but if it has an 8 stamped on it it's an 8:1

here's a post w/ pics http://www.roversnorth.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8908&highlight=head

Cristian: Wecome to the forum! It is standard procedure for new posters to post pictures of their trucks so we can all ooh and aah and ask you questions and say things like "Nice truck!"

Ok here it goes, My wife and I have wanted a Series truck for a very long time, And about 3 weeks ago we became the proud owners of a well used but very original 73 Series 3. I went to see the truck which was located in Lake Isabella from Riverside which is 3 and a half hours away on a Friday, and my Dad and I picked it up that Sunday. It was a long weekend, but worth the effort since I came home with a really neat truck.

The bad news is that the truck had a knock, from my experience, it didnt sound too bad, certainly not a ROD knock, but upper end. Well I started tearing into it and found that it was a ROD knock, not the best scenario, but fixable. I purchased a used engine that I will be installing in the next couple of weeks.

The question about the head came from the fact that the man that I purchased the engine from claimed it has an 8.1 head on it but I had no way of knowing it that was the case, with your help I was able to find out that it really was an 8.1 head, and that the engine that came with the original truck also has an 8.1 head.

I will be installing new tires, leaf springs and doing a complete reseal on the truck, it should be fun.

Here are some pictures of when I picked it up. If you can't see them please shoot me a PM with the correct procedure for posting pictures.

we had that rack on our 109 when we first got it too. It was apparently a factory option.

:thumb-up: Those racks are cool, they were a factory and or dealer option. I have one somewhere but it needs new feet. Some day I'd like to get it galvanized...

...because, unlike those from the northeast, they usually don't have patches on the rear fenders where the seat belt supports dissolved the aluminum.

Very nice!

Some interior / dash photos, please.

All the interior photos I have were taken with my phone, I will try to take some more next week so I can post them. The interior seems to all be there, I am the third owner of this truck, the guys father I bought it from purchased it from the original owner in 1980, and they pretty much drove it without doing much to it till I bought it. The rack was on there when the 2nd owner bought it.

Man! Your rig is a spittin' image of my 1973 (except for my rig's Texas sunburn) -- photo attached, along with 2 snaps of the options list that was wedged up under the driver's seat frame. Will be interested to learn if the two are close to each other's build date/chassis number.
