So my wife was out and about and the radio display went all green and then shut off. no light or anything. I checked the fuse and it is good. The light that lights up the numbers and controlls come on when you turn the headlights on but the display does not. Anyone have any Ideas of where to look for the problem? is there a fuse or something in the radio it self? Loose conection at back off radio? I am stumpted. How do you take the radio out to check the conections?:(

Well, taking the radio out is quite the process, as it involves removing the plastic surround in addition to a few other bits. I would not recommend doing unless you have done it before, as something might break.
There is no fuse in the radio, but it sounds like it could be a loose connection.
Two weeks ago I started my DII and the radio functioned as normal, but there was no sound. After a few minutes fiddling with the volume, turning it on and off, it finally came back and had worked fine ever since although now it stays on when the Disco is off. The other alternative is that it could have just expired.
Referring to the '99-'02 DII, if you have a CD player, under the passenger seat is a white connection module. Disconnect it and then reconnect it. I know for a fact it resets the CD player, but perhaps it could do the same for the radio as well. That's all I can come up with.

Tried the cd thing. No luck, did pull the radio unplugged everything it does have a small 10 amp fuse but it was good. I think I am looking at haveing to replace it at this point. Anyway to keep the sterring wheel controls and the cd changer with an aftermarket unit?

Sorry about the no fuse opinion, that was told to me by the dealer. Oh well, it wouldn't be the first time they got something wrong.
The head unit you have is Alpine, the speakers are Harmon/Kardon. If you have leather seats, than you have the 320 watt system with the subwoofer in the taildoor.
If you go aftermarket, my understanding is that the controls on the steering wheel will not work because they are specific to the OE Alpine unit that was used for the entire production run from '99-'04. Also, the fit of the aftermarket unit may be different.
You could try to locate the replacement unit through the dealer, or perhaps through the audio specialist. Also, have them look at it first- it is possible that there is a less expensive solution to the problem that I am unaware of.

thanks Thor, I will be looking at my options today. I really like the weather radio on this unit. I wonder will the radio out of a disco I work. There are a couple in the salvage yards close to me. I have the leather and sub woofer in the rear door like you described.

The radio of a Disco I will not work, as all the electronics are different. BMW bought Land Rover in '94 and sold it to Ford in '99, before that it was British Leyland. When the Disco I was built from '89-'98, most of the electronics were Lucas, and the wiring was iffy at best.
BMW did a great job with the redesign of the DII, most notably using Bosch and Nippondenso for many parts and wiring. The Alpine unit was, from what I understand, one of the many changes as well.
You also have the RDS feature, as well as the weatherband, which were not available on the Disco I sound systems. RDS was not even available on the DII unless you got the upgraded package.
I would stick with the DII radio. They have to be out there.

I'm probably wrong but I thought that getting the radio out of a DII only involves inserting the two flat radio removal tools in the slots on either side of the radio to release the catches and then pulling it out.
There is a place that repairs and sells radios http://www.roverville.us/
Have not personally used them but you can do a search on discoweb.org
