When driving without 4x4 engaged, should the tranny be in "High" or "Low". It has been a year since I drove one and I forgot. Sorry for the dumb ???

Yes..

For Low speed use the High ratio gearset

For High Speed use the Low ratio gearset

Assuming you have no freewheeling hubs, when your in Low range 4x4 will be engaged

Ditto on the 2 previous replies and I might add that you probably shouldn't use low range at all on dry pavement because it's in 4wd when in low range. Your axles will thank you and so will the diff 3rd member, and the driveshafts, and...

Cheers!

PS - The only 'dumb question' is the one not asked. Your question was a good one and the replies will help you enjoy your Rover all the more.

Do you mean hi/low range on an overdrive or transfer case?

When driving without 4X4 engaged you are in high range. I don't know of any modification to the Series T-case that allows you to drive in 2wd in low range.

i modified mine to run in 2 wheel drive low range...blew up the rear spider gears and couldn't get it out of low range. had me a real slow moving fwd truck for a while

Was your modification something like, remove rear prop shaft?

was climbing, jump on the throttle with rr wheel in the air, when it made contact the axle twisted the spiders shaft snapped. rear prop was still in place but it would not come out of low range. 4th gear low range = 28 mph crawl home
