How do you tell the difference between a 5mb 2.25 petrol and 2.5 petrol?
Any physical differences in the block or head to distinguish them?

Sure. The serial number, stamped in the block somewhere (different locations, depending on engine) will tell all.

The different engine serial number codes are all listed here (http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/engno.htm).
