I'm pretty new to land rovers. I was wondering about noise in my transmission. It seems to whine at high speeds. not a loud whine but you can hear it. Is this common?

No that's not common at all. Your gearbox is seriously broken. All of ours run as silent as goose down gliding slowly down through the still Autumn air. Those fitted with Faireys are even more quietterer. Right guys!?

Yes. At least on mine it is. That's if I can hear it over all the other noise.

This should be required reading for series owners imho;

After this you should have an honest view of our collective dysfunction.

Well I just got from a drive. It seems the noise appears when I engage the fairy overdrive, and only briefly upon accelerating. Other than that it seems quiet( if that's possible traveling at 60 mph).

Try using Redline shockproof gearoil in the tranny and transfer case. Quieted ours down allot.

I put a capfull of powdered graphite in all my boxes and diffs. Not much reduction of noise in any one alone, but collectively is better. Its about as inert as an additive as you can get.:thumb-up:

Inert at the expense of aluminum and brass. Just about the top of the galvanic scale.

I have not had a failure yet.:thumb-up: This and I run GL-5. Living on the edge.
