driveline play, normal or not??

I am looking to buy a 109 SW with chevy 6 cyl and upon test driving the rover noticed a fair amount of "slack " in the drivetrain when decelerating. When I checked under the rover after the test drive I was able to rotate the drivehaft by hand 6-8 inches either way - seems like more slack than should be. Does anyone have any suggestions on where the problem may lie in the drivetrain?
