Heat Control Valve

I'm trying to install a spigot style heat control tap on the rear of the head of a 62 88 but the valve points in the wrong direction when tightened. I've tried new copper washers and even stacked two in order to try and get the valve to point toward the heater instead of hanging over the valves. This is for a Smith's Round heater on a LHD. Does anyone have any experience with this? Maybel I'll try a third washer but i'm worried it's just going to leak. Any comments welcome!
