Driving 600 miles in new 2 me Ser 3 Stage 1. What do I need to take with me?

Hey Guys (and gals),
New to the Land Rover community. Just bought a 1983 Series III Stage 1 and have to drive it 600 miles home. I am having it checked out and topped off prior to my trip, but wondered what emergency things I should take with me that I cannot find on the road.

I appreciate any comments. Keep in mind that I am flying in so I can't take any tools with me.

you can probably take some basic useful tools. spanners and screwdriver rolls, pliers, sockets etc... you'd just have to check the bags as to opposed to carry on.

1) get a AAA premier membership with a 200 mile towing limit.

2) compile a list of any rover friendly shops along the way.
3) compile a list of hotels near the rover friendly shops along the way.
4) compile a list of friends along the way
5) pre program all important numbers into your phone before you leave
6) warm clothes

I got a SPOT Messenger for when driving in my series II. They have a road side assistance package. It works great used it already when I purchased a M416 trailer. I was pulling it home and the bearings locked up, using my SPOT messenger had a flat bed tow truck within 30 minutes.

Thanks guy! I have confirmed my AAA status, subscribed to "the list". Begun my other list of repair and parts places. Researched carry on tools (get this, if it is under 7" you can take it on) hem . . that's what she said.
I digress . .

Thanks for all of the help. As a side note, I was looking over my VIN and I'll be damned if it looks like my LR came originally as a 109 petrol. Not that it matters since the price was right (read free). However, now I have to go through the whole thing and see what was replaced correctly in the upgrade.

Before you go how about sending your details to the Stage 1 register.

Actually, get fully serviced before you go. Change all the fluids (including diffs, gearbox and transfer case) and make certain the brakes are adjusted. If it's going to be hilly or in high country I would also consider flushing the cooling system out. A tune up is a good idea too. Will save you a bunch in fuel.

Apart from that I never go out without a decent tool kit and a couple of socket sets (1/4" and 1/2" drive). A bundle of wires and alligator clips are a good idea, along with a circuit tester. A spare coil and ignition module (if you are electronic) or condenser and points (if you aren't). Spare dizzy cap and rotor. A large container of water, a largish container of engine oil, a smallish container of diff oil, a small container of brake fluid. Light bulbs for the head lights, brake lights, quarter lights, and indicators. Fuses. A couple of bottle or screw jacks and a block of wood to put under them. Some chain and a selection of nuts, bolts, and washers.

I also take a spade and a full set of recovery gear.

All this stuff lives in the wagon

Just a quick report back that I had no major mechanical problems except intermittent heat and turn signals. Eventually, both stopped working and it made for a cool trip as the back windows kept blowing open over the bumps. Ah the joy of Land Rover.
