    Unhappy 1984 Defender 90 2.5 TD turbo info (not a 200/300tdi)

    Greetings all!

I am looking for some help with my turbo - specifically a local resource for a rebuild kit - worst case a swap in unit.

It is a Garrett T2 based on my research. I am told that they were used a lot here in the US in boats and cars/trucks, but only find references to them for ROW. In the US, there seems to only be T2x (x being a number) or a Dodge Shelby turbo with a T2 engine?

Anyone have any leads for local resources for rebuild kits , swap in parts, or junkyards for sourcing alternate installs?

    All information appreciated,
    Sean

    My situation:

    - Lots o' smoke on acceleraton - exhaust blowing out near turbo (haven't pinpointed it specifically...some noted oil drips below turbo.
    - taking the exhaust pipe off this weekend and expect to find oily goo.

RN can source one for $1200.00.
Takes about 10 days to procure.

Let me know if this is of interest.

I think I posted it there as well as Landyzone - where there are tons of these 2.5TDs :P

    Thanks,

Thanks Les - I appreciate the offer...I'm going to pull it, have it rebuilt (if possilble). Otherwise, I am going to go the low mile 200TDI route - tho I'd rather keep it stock. Cost/benefit analsysis wins.

    Thanks,

    Thanks for the update.
Finding a low mileage Defender 200 Tdi is a real challenge, all the best with that. Good thing is that it is virtual straight bolt in and will throw less of its oil around the engine bay, plus you get the intercooler, plus PAS also.

Let us know how you get on.

    All the best,

Did the search on rebuilding my turbo when it was on it's way out. Found out it wasn't rebuildable due to the way it was constructed. One of the bearings journeys is the center section body itself. Once that's worn, the turbo's done. Rovers North was the best cost route for me as I had other parts coming any way.
There are less pricey (cheap) knock off online units, BUT, gamble on if it fits or lasts.

If you use a 2.5 NA intake and exhaust manifold you could surely adapt a similar (more easily rebuildable) turbo from another source.

    I got a great rebuild for about $500 at G-Pop shop http://gpopshop.com/.

I discovered a busted lifter rod after replacing, then after checking all the valves and rods I have discovered a starter issue...
