Default Max thermostat rating for a 2.5 diesel?

So I just put a new, non-landrover thermostat in my Deefer and i finally have heat! its a 90 degree centigrade rated 54mm GM thermostat. What I really want to know is what is the highest temp rating I can use without risk of damaging my truck?

I run a 195F (90C) thermostat in my 2.5 and find the temp gauge normally hovering a needle width below the "H" (as in "hot") when it's not too cold outdoors.

With the 180F (82C) thermostat the needle stayed in the middle of the "N" (as in "normal") on the gauge, but I'd have to use a radiator muff when the outdoor temps dipped below 32F/0C.

Doesn't answer your question about the MAX thermostat you can run without damaging the engine, but speaking personally, I'd get nervous running anything above 195/90 based on the indication on my temp gauge.

Thats exactly where my temp gauge needle sits, I have removed the fan but plan to reinstall it this weekend and use a rad muff.

Do you have a part # for the GM thermostat? I need to replace mine in my '84 110 w/200TDi.

    Thanks

If the 200Tdi uses the same thermostat as the 2.5, then I just ask the computer jockey at the parts store for a 195-degree thermostat (or 180 or whatever temp I want) for a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.2 liter engine.

I have an electric fan installed. Usually I just use a rad muff, but this year I just unplugged the fan and skipped the muff. So far, so good. Of course, I can always plug the fan back in any time, but if you're running the mechanical fan, that could present problems if you hit a warm winter day.

Its a standard 54mm thermostat, GM uses them in almost everything.

Beware the 200 TDi and the 2.5 NAD and 2.5 TD, take different stats.

    OE # for 200 TDi = ERR2803

    2.5 NAD and 2.5 TD = 602687 82c
    2.5 NAD and 2.5 TD = ETC4761 74c

    Hope this helps.
