Thread: SIII transmission swap into SIIa Compatibility

Default SIII transmission swap into SIIa Compatibility

Started a new thread as I have a new focus on my potential transmission swap from a SIII into my SIIa.

Can I keep my SIIa bellhousing and just swap the actual transmission from the SIIIa if both are 4 cylinder engines? Trying to mitigate the issue of the clutch actuation method (which are different between the SIII and SIIa)

Are the input shafts and bellhousing mounts are compatible between SIII and SIIa's (both 4 cylinders)?

IIa bellhousings past a certain suffix (d I think) will fit the SIII box. But, you need to use the input shaft and layshaft constant speed gear etc from the IIa.if the trans is in the truck it can be a bitch to get the bellhousing back on since the layshaft droops down a bit. I used a dowel through the drain plug hole to prop up the layshaft.

Or if the trans is already out, stand it up on the handbrake drum, support it with an appropriate block of wood, and R & R the bell housing and input shaft, thus avoiding the shafts falling out of synch.
