    GB plate:

    UK (registration) plate front:

    UK (registration) plate rear:

or, more appropriately for most of us:

The front (black on white) long ones are easy to find, the rear (black on yellow) long ones are easy to find, the rear (black on yellow) square-ish ones are hard to find, and Les just linked to the really old style.

Always wondered what the diffrence was between the long rectangular plates and the square plates...learn something new everyday. My rear plate is like the 2-line square black plate shown in Les's link. Thanks for the info, think I'm going to order a front. Does anyone know if there is an avenue to reasearch the original plate numbers?

You can get pretty close using the first year you think it was registered along with the location where it was originally registered.

    Here are some helpful links:

Ok, just raising the bar a little here,if you follow this link

    http://www.nationalnumbers.co.uk/num...te-history.htm

you will find out all there is to know about British number plates, including the prefix and suffix letters and even the pre- 1963 system of 3 letters and 3 numbers.
if you have the original "log book" for the vehicle you can get plates made up at any car parts store in the UK. not that expensive either. The style of plate was only dependent on the placement of the plate. i.e bumper mounted- rectangle, wing mounted- square.

Military plates are different in that they are normally 2 letters, two numbers, two letters type usually square.

the link also has other links that can take you on a history tour of the vehicle as well, you may need to set an evening aside to read it all !
hope it has not been too boring for you. I thought I had escaped the DVLA, but they always drag you back !

Yikes indeed. I would be pretty wary of a company that chooses to register its site in Tuvalu (yes, and that includes media companies )

parrie, the GB plates are a white oval plate that has the letters GB on it, and IIRC it was an automobile club plate in England, the UK plates are the registration plates, sort of equivalent to our license plates, except they stay with the vehicle when you sell it, and can be sold to other people using the proper paperwork, if it's a plate they like. (Usually a historic, dated plate)
