Light Problems

Some electric issues on my '97 Disco

I am having some issues with my tail lights and dash lights. The issue is simple, they don't work. I initially thought it was due to a burned out buld, but think the litany of problems leads to a bigger cause.

So, here's the full list of what does not work:
tail lights
dash lights
rear fog lights
front brights

The head lights were not working for a while, but they have come back on. As mentioned, the brights do not work, and my front mounted hella lights do not work either. The previously worked when the brights and rear fog lights were both on. Also, when the blinkers are on, the interior lights on the radio and shift box flash on and off. It is like a nightclub in my car.

I've been told to look at the relay, but was wondering if anyone had some sage advice. I'd love to ignore it, but with an inspection coming up soon, don't think that is an option. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like it could be the relay but if it isn't you would have to check the circut. The only real way to do that is to follow a good wireing scamatic. The best I have found is on the CD put out for each of the ranger models. the wiring diagrams are very easy to understand and they label every wires color and locations of splices and relays. The CDs also have manuals for everything on the rig, including overhaul manuals for the engine and gearbox. You can get them from http://www.dap-inc.com and from http://www.atlanticbritish.com. Corrosion!

Check the bulb unit stems for rust and file out any that's in the sockets. Wire brush and sandpaper back to a shine and then spray/daub copious amounts of repel everywhere.

Clean grounding harnesses (to the same degree of shiny newness) behind the battery and to the right of the air filter box too.

Fuses, check 'em all in the cluster on the right (behind the battery) and, given that the bulk of your problems are rearward, the impossibly awkward set that are under the steering wheel.

Beg, borrow or buy a factory manual from Rovers North (I only found Rovers North after I'd gotten one, but they've been so helpful in other ways they deserver our business whenever the opportunity arises)...

Hey,

not sure if you have had an answer yet to your question but I had a very similar issue happen to me. I tried fitting some of those super white xenon bulbs into my Disco I and I ended up frying the headlight control multi function switch. It took me forever to figure it out but non of my dash lights worked, tail lights and all would not work. After I fitted a new multifunction switch, it was fine. I dismantled the old switch just to see what happened and all the copper inside melted. It wasn't pretty! Hope it helps
