How hard is to replace a 4.0 V8???

Hello all,

I'm fairly mechanically inclined and facing a dead rover V8 in a discovery I. I'm looking at replacing the 4.0 with the 4.6. How hard/how long of a process am I looking at in performing the transplant? The 'shop' book at my local dealership says it's going to take 20 hours - or at least that's what they'd charge do do the work.

I'm looking for guidance on whether such a task is a reasonable project....

If you have the time and a place to do it, there's no reason not to try it yourself.

Likely the biggest issues you will have are lining the engine up with the transmission bellhousing and there are ways to reduce this difficulty.

For a first timer, I'd plan for at least 30-40 hours. BTW-my Rover estimating guide shows it being a 13 hour job worst case (warranty time).

I have just begun an engine build for my Disco trail rig. Once I get the shortblock assembled, I expect two eight hour days to remove the existing engine and install the new shortblock.
