    Default Ticking noise from engine

    Hello all -

My 2002 P38's coolant recovery hose (small diameter hose from top of radiator, around battery, back to coolant recovery tank) burst at the battery-area bend, causing the engine to run somewhat dry and overheat. I ran it in the "red zone" of the temp gauge for about 10 - 15 minutes, on surface streets.

Since, the engine's developed a "ticking" noise that's pretty obvious from outside the truck at idle. No coolant is present in the oil on the dipstick, nor are there any apparent leaks around the gaskets. All else appears well.

So..., any idea what extent of damage has been caused, and how to rid it of the ticking (lifter?) sound?

Oh dear. Sorry to hear that - the Rover V8 doesn't like overheating and running it for quarter of an hour in the red won't have done it a lot of good. The ticking could be any number of things - failed hydraulic tappet (lifter), sticking valve/rocker/pushrod, or maybe even combustion let-by from a scored cylinder... Did you notice any power loss while you ran in the red? If you did, then the pistons will have been dragging against the cylinder walls and will have scored them up - nothing less than a rebuild will solve that, unfortunately. If the engine didn't stiffen up, then you might be lucky - try adding something like Wynns Engine Flush to the oil, clearing the engine through and changing the oil as it could just be oil varnish causing the pushrods to stick. In any case, I'd change the oil as this will have been your only cooling medium during you 15-min hot run and will have been degraded.

What's the engine running like now (apart from the ticking)?

    Good luck!

It could also be an exhaust leak caused by the overheated head- But this does not discount the things already mentioned...

get it checked thoroughly by a pro if you are not capable or qualified to do so yourself.
