Thread: Unmatched Tire Tread Depth

    Default Unmatched Tire Tread Depth

I just put my two spare tires on the front but am concerned about the possibility of slightly different tire diameters causing transmission or center diff problems. By eye, the fronts have 4/32" more tread, I'll pick up a gauge today to confirm. This is the most allowed on Audi all wheel drives, with Subaru saying just 2/32". I can't find any figures for Land Rover in the manual or online. Does anyone have any figures or experience with this? Should I have put the tires on the rear?

    Thanks!

As long as the basic tire size is the same I don't think there's much cause for worry. Having the tires at different pressures would amount to much more difference than 4/32" tire tread difference. Also extreme problems would be the same from front to back wheels as well as from side to side, as these are full time 4 wheel drive. I've never encountered a problem with minor differences in total diameter.
