I know that these motors last forever when properly maintained, but what is considered end-of-life on these?

I would like to think properly maintained and an intelligent driver that they should easily surpass 200,000. Letting an engine warm up and cool down properly seems to be absurd these days! I have a toyota pickup (gas of course) with 270,000 and runs like a top and never been rebuilt. Its all how you care for it and drive it. In reality these 200tdi engines come from the U.K. and I know they do not drive the distances we do so it is easy to find them with less than 100,000 miles. I just purchased a defender 200tdi engine out there with 70,000 miles. I would put one in a truck with 200,000 miles on it if I knew it was properly taken care of.
