    Replica Plate?

Last year when I was having body work done on my vehicle, my british plate (on the back) was removed and subsequently lost. Despite searching for it, it has never turned up. So my question is this - is their anyone out there who manufactures replica plates (correct size, color and my old #'s), or is this British high treason? Thoughts appreciated.

    Cheers.

I have a fuzzy recollection of our hosts selling some sort of customized number plate at one point. Not sure if they still do. Les would surely be able to tell you.

Front plates are easy to find--Rear plates are a different story. Might have to have one made in the UK.

Wait--Here's a place that makes them. Yikes!

To what plate are you referring? The GB plate? Or the UK license plate?

Les - not sure what the difference is between the GB plate and the UK license plate you mentioned. The one I lost was yellow rectangular with black lettering.

What exactly is the difference between the GB & UK plates and front versus rear? The rear that is attached to mine is approximate 12" x 12", black w/ silver letters/numbers. Would be cool to have the matching front.

                      GB plate:

                      UK (registration) plate front:

                      UK (registration) plate rear:

or, more appropriately for most of us:

The front (black on white) long ones are easy to find, the rear (black on yellow) long ones are easy to find, the rear (black on yellow) square-ish ones are hard to find, and Les just linked to the really old style.

Always wondered what the diffrence was between the long rectangular plates and the square plates...learn something new everyday. My rear plate is like the 2-line square black plate shown in Les's link. Thanks for the info, think I'm going to order a front. Does anyone know if there is an avenue to reasearch the original plate numbers?

You can get pretty close using the first year you think it was registered along with the location where it was originally registered.

Ok, just raising the bar a little here,if you follow this link

Read more about the history of number plates and how the the different formats of number plates have evolved over the years till the present day.

you will find out all there is to know about British number plates, including the prefix and suffix letters and even the pre- 1963 system of 3 letters and 3 numbers.
if you have the original "log book" for the vehicle you can get plates made up at any car parts store in the UK. not that expensive either. The style of plate was only dependent on the placement of the plate. i.e bumper mounted- rectangle, wing mounted- square.

Military plates are different in that they are normally 2 letters, two numbers, two letters type usually square.

the link also has other links that can take you on a history tour of the vehicle as well, you may need to set an evening aside to read it all !
hope it has not been too boring for you. I thought I had escaped the DVLA, but they always drag you back !
