Hello all,

I was planning on changing the oil (first time) on my Series III in the gearbox, transfer box, and front/rear diffs. At the same time I wanted to do the Fairy overdrive.

So, I got a good tip on here about not overfilling it, and to use the fill plug/dipstick on the top.

I found the following picture of a Fairy overdrive, and see no filler plug on the top as indicated.

http://www.lrfaq.org/Series/FaireyOverdriveManualPg8.html

The casting looks the same where the picture's arrow points for the oil, just without the plug--solid it is. Is there a variation...I see a plug on the side a little ways down, but am not sure if that is the one? Should I assume if that is the plug to just fill it till oil starts to come out like on the diff/tranny/transfer filler plugs?

Regards,
Julian

Does it look more like the one in the ad? With the dipstick/filler plug on top?

It is a Fairey and not a Santana?

Julian, the first Faireys didn't have a dipstick/fill plug on the top, just a level/fill plug on the side. The dipstick fill plug was added by Fairey, and continued on when Superwinch took over production. It was subsequently sold to Rovers Down South, who produce the same overdrive as the later Fairey casting. Fill it either through the side plug, or take the top off and fill till it comes out the side hole.

Thanks all-

Definitely not a Santana, so I am going with your insight Terry.....I must have an early Fairy then.
