I removed the rear plate and found all internal parts soaked in Transmission Oil. I see there is an oil catcher and a joint washer for the oil catcher. Are there other points of ingress, and pointers of how to stop the oil-bath after replacing the brake shoes? Also, the springs were rattling around disconnected. From the rear of the vehicle looking forward, do they go on the inside or outside of the brake shoes? What a mess!

I may be saying something you already know, but make sure you set up the expander to "float" as per the manual. I have seen many a PO tighten this right up and this mechanism can't centre itself resulting in a chuddering set up if applied on the move. Oh, that and it don't work too good.Comment
