    Wiring for a Winch

I have a rather large winch that came with my 60 Series 2 SWB Land Rover. It has one red wire prob a #4 that is meant to go to the positive side of the battery. It was not connected when I got the truck but it works and I would like to hook it up. I would imagine the positioning of the switch is important. I am thinking about using a battery cut off switch w/ key as a switch. I would also imagine that it should be fused as well. What type of fuse set up should I use?
I can provide pics if that will help, but any electrical advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thx

When I wired in my Warn 8274 I used a Cole Hersee 2000amp disconnect (PN 75908). I like this switch because it rests in the off position and snaps into the on position. No worry about battery drain.

I soldered some ends to some old welding cable and ran that from the battery to the switch, which I mounted to the top of the breakfast. I didn't bother with a fuse.

Edit: sheesh, I need to proof read before hitting submit.

Here is A method of fusing your winch if you choose to...
When I purchased my Superwinch 9.5 Talon, I connected it directly to the battery per the instructions. I have never been comfortable with this. Since my winch is enclosed and locked in an Aluminess bumper, I don't worry about the hooligans messing with it and "paper clipping" the control...

If you add a cutoff switch (recommended) then I don't think you really need the fuse. I mounted my C/H switch so it pokes up on top of the radiator panel. All I do is open the hood a bit, reach in, turn it on and close the hood. Out of sigh, out of mind and easy to access.

So...what winch are you putting on? Pics please!

I found the Series 2 in about 3 ft of bushes. It had been there for many, many years and the winch and huge bull bar bumper w 2 jerry can holders was original so I took it apart and cleaned it and it works great. The winch didn't have a switch so that is why I was asking how to connect it. i will do a cut off switch as you suggested and mount it like yours. All still a work in progress, but the truck runs amazingly well and have driven it a bit w no brakes or running lights.

Winch says Jack & Heintz Co. I found JAHCO online it was or is a airplane manufacturer in the UK. Pretty old school so I had to keep it.

That's a very interesting winch. Do you have more photos?

I am confident that someone hand-built this one, but I could be off the mark. The motor and attached planetary drive look to be aviation-grade.

            Hi Mark,
I will take a few more, but I suck as as photographer and they always seem to download upside down. There is a lever that allows it to turn freely so that you can pull out the cable. Once engaged the motor pulls well. A friend gave me a new metal cable so I will use that for now. The entire brush bar, winch and jerry can holder looks hand made and very beefy. I wonder if it was used as some kind of tow vehicle.

Here is another pic of the winch. The lever takes it in and out of gear. Pulls strong.

Okay, I did not stand on my head for the pic but they always upload upside down sorry.

I was hoping for more pictures in this thread. Planning on installing an electric winch on my '88 and am currently shopping for ideas on bumpers and wiring.

Anybody have pictures they would care to post?

If I were in the market for a winch bumper and our hosts didn't have what I were looking for, my next stop would be Pangolin 4x4, who makes custom HEAVY DUTY winch bumpers for series rovers in a few different styles. For example:
