Anyone have any pictures of the rear door spare tire carrier? Trying to figure out what I will need to make this work.

    thanks!

Yes exactly! Thanks. Anyone else? I have the three prongs sticking out of the back door that held a tray to hold 2 gas cans. Took that off and looking for what is needed to mount a spare tire.

        The parts are pretty simple:

        - flat plate that is mounted to the outside of the door, with studs attached
        - flat plate for outside the door (essentially like a big washer)
        - nuts and washers
        - U bolt and nuts inside
        - circular retaining ring (essentially like a big washer that goes on after the tire is shipped onto the 3 long bolts)

Here are some diagrams from RN's catalog:

On the Defender, the assembly is mounted higher than on the Series, my guess is to improve departure angle? There may be a few other minor differences, but otherwise the doors should be interchangeable.

Add a third hinge if you're actually going to hang a spare back there.

Buy a hinge, close your door. Latch it. Remove your hinge pins. Run a piece of all thread or a long dowl down through your top hinge and your new "middle hinge" and then down to the bottom one. mark your holes. drill... you now have a third hinge mounted that will handle the weight of having a spare on your rear door.

Thanks RW, I forgot the Defender door had 3 hinges, and a good idea to add for the Series if you are going to hang a tire there. I would advise a carrier like the one Ike made (he posted in a different thread), where it is not attached to the door at all.

Good deal. Thanks a lot for the info and diagrams.

Does anyone have a picture of a Series with the third hinge modification to the rear door?

Go with the third hinge, my PO didn't and my door bends out a bit as a result - I've been meaning to fix it, but haven't got around to it.

Any thoughts on a swing away on a Series? I haven't seen one - pics would be great if anyone has one...

Ike Goss makes what is the most bomb proof spare tire carrier out there. He posts here, so I'm sure he'll pop up with details and photos.. I have one of his bumpers and it's a work of art.

i was thinking about using a discovery spare tire mount on my series tailgate. Do you think the tailgate can support it?
