    Spring Ring - Main Shaft

Any suggestions on removing the Spring Ring which holds third gear to the main shaft? This is so SIMPLE I can't believe I'm asking, but...

I've tried channel locks, an assortment of screwdrivers, and even alittle heat hoping to weaking the spring. It's surprisingly resilent.

My next step is going to be buying acouple of cheap screwdrivers, filing down the ends, and bending them to 90 degrees to try and lever that spring out.

There has got to be an easier way???

The only way to get that ring out is to destroy it and use a new one when you reassemble. A single flat screwdriver filed to be as wide as the root of the spline can be forced under the ring. You then lever it as far out as you can and it will take a set well out of the groove. repeat the levering operation a few times at different points until it can be lifted out. Putting it back also present problems. I have machined a cone that fits over the end of the shaft but for many years employed two vice grips to pull apart the ends. Wear goggles in case it escapes......
