    Engine Choice For D1

It's time to change out the 3.9 gasoline engine.
I live in a place that does not have emissions testing, so I get my choice of engines.
I have the 5 speed manual gearbox.
    Any suggestions?
It really is a pity Land Rover put such a poor engine in my go-anywhere 4x4. I wish it was a diesel.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. Nearly two years ago Don At Rovolution in North Van. installed a brand new 2.8 TGV kit (M&D Engineering), Ashcroft rebuilt R380 and rebuilt the transfer case. It was expensive but I am DELIGHTED with the result - even with the high cost of diesel fuel. The mileage is about 50% better and the torque is super and at low speed. At higher speeds above 100kph it doesn't quite have what the V8 had but around here the limit is either 80 or 90 kph as I guess it would be up your way.

Another possibilty might be a good used 300TDI.

Have you posted this on the Roverlanders forum? I agree that Rover should have given us the diesel to start with.

    Cheers,

For the best in "go-anywhere" engines I'd go with a 200Tdi, second would be a 300Tdi. There may be "better" overall choices but the parts needed for a 200 or 300 conversion are all off-the-shelf since they were both factory engines for the D1.
The 200 needs no electrics to run and the 300 only needs one wire for the fuel shutoff (and that can be done without in a pinch but you'll have to stall the engine to shut it down).

Go with a 300, it was around longer and there's a bigger supply. Email me, Zack@roversnorth.com
