hub seal leaking, can i just put new LR grease

I have a 95 disco the front right hub is leaking at the rim of the tire I havent driven it sense I noticed the leak, In stead of paying the $400 per axel can I just replace the hub oil with the new hub grease that land rover makes. This vechical is for mostly for off road use and short drives to work or town it might drive 3,000 miles a year. I do preventive matainence my self every two weeks so keeping an eye on fluid levels etc is not a problem. Any Info or opinons would help
    Thanks Jesse

This depends on where it is leaking, if from the swivel, then you can drain the oil and add the one shot grease (the seal may just be going bad). You Rover should have been updated with the grease by now if it was seen at the dealer, there was a TSB on this.

If from somewhere else, then you may have another issue.

From what I under stand there are two seals that keep the swivel oil, grease in, one that sperates it from the differential oil and the other from comming out by the rim and tire. The oil is comming out inbetween the rim-tire and the brake rotor.

That seal is a PITA to change... basically you have to tear apart the entire front hub...

But if you have oil in there still, drain and use the one shot grease, and issue should go away.

If you already have the one shot grease in there (kind of an oily grease) then you may either need to just monitor and fill or replace the seal.

It sounds like you are saying that it is NOT the swivel ball seal that is leaking, but the front inner hub seal. It is not hard to replace, RTC3511 is the seal you want. Remove the wheel, brake caliper and hub, pull the old seal, repack the bearings and install the new seal to a depth of 3mm below flush.

Thanks Kevin, I just reread what he posted and if it is coming out on the caliper side you are correct.... for some reason I was thinking the swivel side... had swivel on the brain.
