Once Erratic, Now Dead, Fuel Gauge/Indicator Thingy

    Hello!

The fuel gauge on my 1998 Discovery has been acting funky for quite a while-- most days it was fine, but once in a while it would not register the proper amount that I know I had in my tank. Now, the indictator needle has dropped down even below "empty" and is just sitting there, even after I put more gas in it. Hubby is pretty savvy when it comes to repairs and he has already checked the fuses and wiring as a start and that didn't help. Has anyone ever had this problem and what would you recommend as the next step?

Many thanks to anyone who responds!

What wiring did he check? I suspect its a bad ground. Best way to test is with a meter from the front back. I would give particular attention to the wiring harness on top of the tank.

FYI: There was a TSB regarding fuel tank replacement from Land Rover. Most owners replaced the fuel pump at the same time (NO ADDITIONAL LABOUR COSTS). If memory serves me right... the float is located on the pump.
